They should not be able to do that. Most teenagers do not have the mental capacity to make proper decisions, they are too impulsive and need guidance. When I was a teenager I got into a lot of trouble and I knew that it was because I was immature, ignorant and arrogant. I did not know better, but now that I am an adult, I can handle things a little better.

Teenagers are young men and women who will in a few short years, have to know how to take care of themselves. True they need the guidance from an Adult. The teenager has to test the waters on their own and suffer the consequences for a poor decision and learn to work through it, before they are really on their own.

They should be allowed to make their own decisions as long has it doesn't have anything to do with their safety and their health.
Parents with teenagers have to walk a thin line because on one hand you want your children to learn to make smart decisions for themselves but on the other hand you have to temper their inexperience.
That's why you were born with 2 parents and not just dropped from the sky. Parents play an important part.

Teenagers should be allowed to make minor decisions, in preparation for making bigger ones later. The Scientific American magazine has a good article (08/2006) on the physical reasons teens act the way they do.

They will make some of the own decisions, but this is the time to complete thier education and teach them how to consider or think about a discision before forming an opinion. You can literally take them in toe and tell them all the things to consider before they make there decision. Let them in on how you make a decision yourself and all that is part of formulating a decision.

They should be allwoed to make decisions within a range. No they should not be allowed to purchase a gun(like we need emotionally unstable teens armed) but they should be allowed to make other decisions less serious. It helps build up their decision making process so when they do go off on their own they can be somewhat ready for the real world.

Some people say that teens should be able to make there own decisions but if your parents have been through some of the issues why can't you just learn from there mishaps why would you want to go through it when they are telling you how its gonna turn out. We think our parents are old and don't know what they are talkin about but nothing is new under the sun time repeats itself

I let my daughter make some decisions.
Are you going to clean your room now or tomorrow?
Teenagers aren't ready to make all of their own decisions. They are still in the egocentric stage of their life. It's also known as "that wouldn't happen to me" stage.
Parents are there to guide them, remind them and teach them. If they can't handle their parents rules, they can't handle the laws in their city, state or Federal government. The general majority don't understand that there are worse repercussions than being grounded and not being able to attend a party.
You are ready to make your own decisions when you are ready to have a job, pay rent, pay taxes and support yourself without calling mommy and daddy to send a western union because you got fired for oversleeping.

Because if they are all allowed to make their own decisions then it will help with the over population problem.
