OMG it's SOOO unclassy
friggin brush your teeth or silentely suck on a mint if you need to.
chewing on gum at formal events makes you look like a cow.

try keeping your mouth closed and moving it in a non-cud grazing fashion. it really depends on the situation of the social affairs. if it is a business type thing and you are planning on speaking ditch the gum and pop some tic-tacs throughout the day (ps-i endlessly chew gum at work all day but always take it out to talk on the phone)

Yeah, I don't really get it either. They could be doing it to keep their mind on something else, or they think it makes them look cool, but it is disrespectful, and I must say that someone chomping on their gum behind me during an exam is my biggest pet peeve.

It doesn't matter to me. You chew it or you don't. It just gives em' somethin' to do while they try to impress all the fellas in the room. Oh, and some people chew gum to get food outta their teeth.

No, it's totally inappropriate and if you are referring to Brittney Spears...I saw that too and was screaming through the TV that she should chew with her mouth closed. It's about the trashiest thing I've seen. It shows a lack of manners and self respect to represent yourself so poorly.
