Well isn't *that* a big honking offensive stereotype...? :p
And I suppose you let Fox News do all your thinking for you, huh? *rofl* :))
But enough giggles....there is a kernel of truth to what you are saying, but not much of one lately.
In more detail: People still remember the recent historical track record established *mainly* by FDR back in the 1940s, one of saving the world from Nazis and fascism, and that track record only got improved by the struggles of the Civil Rights Era in the 1960s and 1970s....
But. Lately it is really the Evil of Two Lessers. If we stick to the regular "two parties" that act more like Siamese Twins joined at the same (corporate) hip, we can "choose" between:
--the Republicans, who we *know* suck up to the Rich Men who want to own it ALL. Only. As in, if the Evangelical Christianoids weren't filthy rich and if the Wahabbis in Saudi Arabia weren't filthy rich they'd get *zero* time, and anyone with half a brain knows this...
Really. It's been crystal clear since Nixon, and even Reagan admitted to this one: Republicans are for the Rich. Problem is, they were also once for Freedom, by virtue of having some *respect* for the Constitution and the Rule of Law....they no longer are. They were once in favor of making government smaller, as recently as the 1980s, not just to screw the poor but to also *keep the politicians out of people's lives*. They no longer are (phone taps anyone? Selling ports to hostile Arab nations like Dubai, anyone?).
--Or we can vote for the Democrats, who *say* they are liberal, but that only means, in context, that they will suck up to the CEO Investor Class 90% of the time versus 150%.
And hope that maybe someone *somewhere* in that Polite Version of the Big Business Party actually does respect Rule of Law, the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, letting law-abiding citizens live their lives in peace (minus fear of phone taps), letting law-abiding citizens *work for a living* (minus fear of outsourcing and/or being replaced by the Felon Immigrant), and basically letting our nation *have* a civilization so folks *don't have to see New Orleans, Post-Katrina, as the future*.
Like I just said--it's the Evil of Two LESSERS. We can, have and MUST do better if our country wants to be free and still around for another century.
The ONLY, only reason I vote Democrat anymore is because I am SICK to the marrow of my BONES of being blamed for Pinky and the Brain up in D.C. *ruining the nation*, ok?? I didn't vote *for* Big Ketchup (lame as he is) so much as I wanted to be DONE WITH DUHBYAHH! I voted for Kerry last time in the hope of being RID OF BUSH.
Because we need someone with a BRAIN calling himself President, damn it. Period. Just deal with it.

Possibly because a number of poor people have been convinced by Democrats in power, that they will always be poor and the Democrats are the only party that will "help". What the Democrats don't say about the "help" they offer is, "Democrats will help you Stay Poor". Democrats only offer to "help" you stay where you are, they don't want to see or help you move up. More often than not, poor people determined to make a better life, work to get it on their own and don't expect or count on anything to be given. Working for something makes a person feel good and appreciative. Being given something doesn't have the same effect.
Give someone a fish... Teach someone how to fish... one helps keep a person reliant on others "help", the later helps a person become independent and self-reliant.
Money, like many things, can and will cloud the mind if a person allows it to.

Your question is a little off. Most poor people in urban areas tend to lean democratic. Most rural poor tend to lean republican. Actually most areas that have lots of people living together, like in a city, tend to vote democratic while those living in less condensed areas or more isolated areas tend to vote republican. Democrats tend to be more social and republicans are more isolationist.
To speak to your question as you asked it, there is a perception that republicans will sell out the poor at every opportunity they have to make a buck in the name of free trade and a free markets. They have a reputation for sticking to the letter of the law (if its legal than it is OK to do) but not the spirit of the law (doesn't matter how good or bad it is for people living in America I can make $$$ shipping those poor Americana's jobs overseas, etc.).
The democrats (like Robin hood) will try to steel from the rich (imposing a fair trade system) to the benefit of the poor saps that republicans have supposedly exploited to make their fortunes on. The truth is somewhere in between and you will have to decide for yourself.
After the last 6 years, I believe it is much truer than not.

Most of the poor are democrats because they want someone to do something for them, Feed, clothe, and house them. They feel the government owes them something and they can not get it by themselves.
Look at a copy of one of Bills last speeches where he says that , the people can not think for themselves or know how to spend their own money. He will do it for them.( is not an exact quote, but close).
ex: I worked with a black man, that made $7.00 an hour. He was proud to be a Democrat, after all when he started working there, he only made $5.25. an hour. Also he wanted a Lb of pork chops not a lb of cheese. If this man only would realize that if he got some schooling and applied himself, His income had no limit and he would not have to rely on the government for handouts.

The Dems have gotten very good at ingraining into people that the hardships they may suffer are not their fault.
It's true in many or most cases, but this removes the pertinence of responsibility from the individual and applies it to some outside factor that only the big, powerful Democratic Party can battle on their behalf.
Democrats are about giving a man a fish; Republicans are about teaching a man to fish.

Sad to say, but most people that vote republican aren't represented by their party of choice.
Newt Gingrich, the then republican speaker of the house, said it best:
"It's far easier to serve the 2% (6 million people with pretty much the same goals) than to serve everyone else."
That's why the democrats seem more disorganized (294 million viewpoints).
However, the historical record is clear. Democrats fix the economy, Republicans break it.
The problem is that with this level of inflation induced during this administration may be impossible to repair.
Those of you that are unsure, you'll find out.
You'll kick yourself. But it will be too late.

Turn to the rep's for putting poor people there, that's why they vote dem, rep's also like to run the country like a business, and I don't see that working yet.Dem's are too laid back. What ever happened to people that could think and do, independantly- give another "party" any other "party",a chance- why is general public so narrow- with liberty and justice for all- sorry 'bout the Q's-- some things to ponder while thinking of this question.

The democrats are friendlier to social programs, which essentially tax from everyone and spend by the government.., but since poor people pay less taxes, they have more to gain from the programs and this philosophy, basically they reap some of the benefits from some of the rich people's money paid in taxes.
Republicans are friendlier to smaller government (though you wouldn't know it these days) with tax cuts for all. Since rich people pay more taxes, this means they will benefit the most from conservative fiscal policy. Tax cuts means slashing government programs, though, which negatively impacts everyone, but especially the poor since they tend to rely more on government assistance.
That's why wealthy people tend to be republican and not-wealthy people tend to be democrat, it all comes down to money.

Republicans are the high tax people and usually the democrats are the ones who have to come in an clean up the mess the reps. made. It is obvious that I must be in a Republican board because I know alot of rich democrats. Where do you get your info?? the Republican party. I don't understand still what you are talking about, if Bush is your republican I will take a democrat any day of the week. An also some people didn't have the option of college and other ways to become "upper middle class". Some women married into it and others were born into it. From your attitudes you don't seem very nice to democrats either. I am far from lazy and have always made a good living and paid my way as a single mother and did get some college but hardships do happen to people and they can only do so much.
By the way to the women who said that the Republicans had morals needs to take at look at hers, if she did she wouldn't praise herself and brag about her status and condemn someone just because they are a democrat.

Traditionally, the Democrats do more to build economic environments which will benefit the people who do work for a living and do take pride in the work they do. This, of course, is in spite of the moronic assertion that the supporters of the Democrats are lazy and want to be handed what is not theirs. Such words are nothing but Class Hate. Please take a lesson from history; see link:

Probably because they know they're getting screw** by the Republicans. Many poor do work, and work hard, they are the working poor. They make just enough not to qualify for handouts. Everyone deserves the right to live, and circumstances, and disaster, sometimes makes it very difficult to survive.
I agree many are lazy. Realize too, that many are mentally handicapped. Should they be punished for that?
No one party can eliminate poverty. As soon as we can all see that, the sooner we can all come to some sort of agreement, instead of being at each others throats all the time.
Pointing fingers at each other solves nothing, and one more child goes hungry, one more person becomes angry, and our homes become less safe from those who seek to do harm.
