Please try out www.exoticpetvet.net. Go to Avian button, then look for article on 20 things to know about Nutrition. Parrots need a wide variety of fresh foods, pellets, and some seed to stay healthy. DYH's can be one of the more sedentary of the parrot species, and you must be careful about feeding them too much fat in the diet (read: too many seeds and nuts!)

If you just want to know what type of pellet to get:

Harrison's Coarse (excellent...and organic) go to Harrison's website to purchase
Kaytee Exact (medium parrot size or Macaw size, depending on what your bird likes more)
Lafebers Parrot size - green label
Zupreem Parrot size

I hope this helps.

The pet store is wrong. You are right about the size of his beak. I use ZuPreem pellets for large parrots. I also supplement fresh fruit and veggies (no salt) and pasta, rice, sweet potatoes (no salt), sunflower seeds, peanuts and much more. Never give salt.

Be careful on the amount of peanuts since they are very fattening and amazons have heavy bodies anyway.

try googling in amazon diet and see what comes up.

Your bird needs larger food. Large nuts and peppers mixed with pellets or extruded. Your bird is about 14 inches long and mine a sun conure is 12 but mine has a large beak like yours. My Tiel likes smaller food but he has a small beak. Don't get walnuts because he will not be able to open them and I do find myself cracking nuts for my bird at times. He seems to love the taste of the larger nuts. Just crack them and let him dig it out.

Petsmart has a lot of food for larger birds. I have found some at Petsplus and Petsco.

Kaytee® Fiesta® is a good one for larger birds or med sized. I get larger bird food and conure food and mix it and he loves it.

Ask for a quality Large parrot mix, it should have dried fruit and nuts in it.
