I don't feel like killing myself or anything, but I have been feeling depressed for about a year now. I am overwhelmed with my 2 young children (even though I have a nanny/housekeeper to help 3 full days a week.), I don't feel like eating well, exercising, and generally making myself look nice. I have trouble getting going in the morning and generally lack energy for the entire day.

Is this depression? Should I try taking some antidepressants? Anyone have an experience like this?

Yes, it sounds like you could be depressed. It is not unusual though, especially if you have been under a lot of stress. Stress and depression go hand in hand. But first you need to check with your family doctor, because many medical conditions mimic depression and are easily treated. The good news is, that if you are depressed and need to be treated with anti-depressants, many people only need them for a short time - six months or so.
Whatever the cause - see your doctor so that you will be able to find out the cause. When you get this treated, you will feel 100% better.

Stay off the pills. Get yourself busy, enjoying things. You have to have a strong will, to push back the depression. I have days, I don't want to be around anyone. I have always been depressed since the age of 13. I have never taken the pills. When depression hits, I get busy doing things, listen to different types of music until you find 1 that seems like it can give you a pick me up. Spend time around a pond or lake, and let your mind run free, write down the important things, see the lesser things floating out into the watr and sinking. I'm 53 now, and yes I still listen to the music, and write down what is important to me. It does help.

I have chronic depression that is controlled very well. You can't just "go on an antidepressant". Your symptoms surely do sound like depression. Your best bet is to go to your family doctor and tell them just what you said here. Usually the combination of talking to a psychologist and taking medication works better than either one by itself. Good luck, finding the right meds and the right counselor takes some time.

It sounds like depression. And whether or not antidepressants will work or not is up to your doctor, and if the depression is general or situation specific.

for example if a loved one dies, and you get depressed, then all the antidepressants in the world won't help. But if you feel blue no matter what the situation, please see your doc. Yeah, I have trouble with depression off and on, but have never taken anti-d's for it.

I suffer from depression so I know exactly how you feel. Yes that is a sign of depression. I have suffered from depression since I was 15. I am now almost 20. I take the antidepressant Zoloft.

it sounds like depression to me but the only way to know for sure is to see your Dr if he advice's you to take antidepressants and you feel that is the best way for you to go then that is fine under your Dr's advice. If you would rather say try a natural treatment then ask about that as well. There is nothing wrong with taking medication under the supervision of your Dr if it helps you and maybe he may just talk. But do see your Dr and take his advice but also feel that you have a right to refuse medication if you like. but find out what else you can do. Good luck

Yes go see your doctor. It could be depression or something else and your doctor will help you. Don't think antidepressants are the answers. Yes they can help but there are other solutions out there. Only your doctor can help you decide what is best for you. I myself have been dealing with depression for seven years.

So sorry you're feeling lousy :( Absolutely go see a Dr ! If you really still feel so bad, and antidperessants work, then do that. BUT please ALSO do other things that promote feeling well: Regular exercise(at least walking)(with a walk buddy is good) (usually another mom like yourself). Also you MUST EAT WELL and get some natural light each day. And expose yourself to some comedy or other lighthearted materials- and whatever MUSIC you like!

i suffered for years with mild depression and was ashamed of getting on antidepressants. i went to the doc while i was pregnant because it got worse, and i finally feel like i am really myself. like i have always been here, but hiding behind a glass wall. i treat my family and friends better and i feel better about myself. it really helped me deal with the depresson and i recently came off of them and couldnt be happier! i feel like i overcame an obstacle in my life and beat it! go for it! do not feel ashamed!
