"Like" is an emphatic marker in contemporary English. "Do" has been losing ground over the last 200 years in its usefulness as an emphatic marker and nothing has replaced it until "like". It's quite possible that the need for an emphatic marker will keep "like" in place and that within the next few decades it will either become more common or stabilize at current levels. I have a feeling that "like" as an emphatic marker may be here to stay. For all you who long for the "good old days" that actually never were:

Like live with it.

The "like" fad is a result of stumbling speech in our society in general. Basically, a person begins a verbal statement, without thinking about how it will end and not realising that in conversation there is no backspace. Other common words are "um" along with regional variations of the phrase. For many people, it has become a habit so severe they do not realize they are doing it.

I'm almost 22 and I still say "like." I don't know why I say it, but I do. I guess it's like, a way to, like they said before, to fill in empty space in a conversation while thinking of the right words. I'm not good at telling stories aloud, and I use like a lot. Maybe that's why; I have to stop and think. I know I can consciously not use this word, because I've done it before. When I speak slowly and think about what I want to say, it doesn't come out. I guess we use it when our mouths are ahead of our brains.

I have a program on my laptop that I activate when I have a load of teenage girls in the car, that allows me to tap a key to keep count. Once, during a 15-minute trip, I clicked it 188 times.

Bohemian, like Hi,

I think its main use is to
gain time to think of what
they are trying to say, like
you know, I was on my way
to, like you know, and then,
like, it happened. OMG, it
happened? Yeah, and like
it was unreal, and then like,
I went on a few more blocks
like, you know, and then it
like happened again, like
incredible you know.

Yup, a time 'gainer'
like, no doubt.!

It is a filler. I'm 30 and I still say like, like all the time.

some use it as a filler instesd of saying uhhh or mmm.
others use it due to the lack of proper use of diction. instead of saying "she said let's go" a person might say "she's like let's go".
good question!
