Like you said, they are idiots that are not helping ANYONE with their anti-military remarks. We need to support our troops because they are fighting to protect US!!!!

At least it seems there are a few good, supportive Americans out there. It also states that a civilian holding a weapon is no longer a civilian and deadly force is authorized. Most of the people we are fighting look like ordinary people, that is why this war is taking so long. People need to face it. The men and women who choose to serve this great country know what they are doing. We HAVE to support them. While I did my tour I knew the people supported what I was doing as it was just after we were attacked. It would have been very demoralizing to know my brothers and sisters of America weren't behind me.

Unfortunately don't fire unless fired upon seems to have disappeared. There are many instances where it's been shoot first ask questions later. This has indeed led to very bad press. A soldier is a murderer if he fires into a bunch of civilians trying to get the bad guy as the Israeli's found out this action only creates more terrorist as the civilians now see you as the terrorist. The army will continue to experience soldiers going postal because an army can not win against a guerrilla force history has proven this time and time again. So soldiers will get frustrated and see everybody as the enemy.

First thing first, rules of engagment depend on the mission and the theater. My military's rules in Afghanistan are currently pretty loose. Same with the current US Iraq ROE's.

However, soldiers from any nationality can be nailed for murder if they use deadly force when they are not authorized to do so, or against personnel who is protected under the Laws of Armed Conflict and the Geneva Convention. An example would be summary execution of captured soldiers and/or insurgents. In the case of soldiers, theyare extended the rights of POW's, and that entitles them to legal status and protection. As for insurgents, they are unlawful combattants and are subject to local civilian laws. Killing them in a firefight is legit all right, but putting one in the back of the head of those a soldier would capture, that would be illegal.

As a soldier myself, it really gets to me that our major successes are only brief blurbs in the media, often downplayed, when our every mistake and scandal makes the front page and we never hear the end of it.

Although I never faced combat, I sat on a runway for a couple of days waiting to go into Iran in '80 during the Hostage Crisis.
I told the guys in my gun squad that I would NOT tolerate rape or the the murder of civilians.
I am sure that most of the other NCO's felt the same way.
That being said, charging soldiers with murder in the time of war, especially in the chaos of close quarters combat is indeed like handing out speeding tickets at a NASCAR event!
Look at the lousy decisions that people make in the relatively calm and safe environment of their homes.
You are right, our ROE is always the most restrictive, even to the point of causing unecessary casualties on both sides, We are forced to be too cautious, and the enemy plays on it pushing us into situations that bring civilian casualties, (a great media coup for them).

As you said, the rules of engagement say they can't fire on anyone until fired upon. Unfortunately not all soldiers have followed the rules of engagement. If you kill an unarmed person, that's murder. Of course most of our soldiers don't murder but there have been cases where they have have -- a murderer is a murderer, soldier or not. That guy who raped the girl and killed her parents is a murderer...and I have have no problem calling him one.

Damn right, self defense! It is not a murder if it is self defense, according to law. Soldiers are not murderers. They are given orders and they carry them out accordingly, and if that means returning fire upon an enemy then they will do just that.

I love our troops for all they are doing. Many of these people say these things, yet they do not consider what it is like for the soldier's in combat. People do many different things in hell-like situations. I've talked to many retired soldier's and they punish themselves for what they had to do; however, they said that what they did had to be done at the time. People say bad things, yet if their town was invaded, I'm sure they would personally give a soldier a gun.

Personally I could not in good conscious kill a human being. I would rather serve God than politicans. But that is me.
Only God can solve mankinds problems and he will bring wickedness to and end soon and war will be no more and the meek will inherit the earth.

I son't believe that soldiers murder in the performance of their duties. However, very rarely, one will muder and ,unfortunately, all get blamed. I don't know what the hold up is in your case. There wsn't any in the cases of the young men and women that I know about. Maybe it has something to do with your attitude(too too gung-ho)
