Whole libraries of books do that!
On the fly - Microsoft OSes are built upon single processor, consecutive processing, (chain stepping prisoners, in a long line, waiting to be next!), system files that take up hundreds of MB.
Every Microsoft device driver/program, or process, is a unique program, leased to users for a short period, (determined by the Microslop Marketing geniuses, who invent new varied time periods between crashes - and issue WGA alerts that shut down licensed users).
Microsoft OS runs programs, hidden from view of the users, in 'System Folders" that interferes with others, but, Internet Exploder, Messenger, and Lookout Explat have full system privileges to kludge up anything that is still running after five minutes of being connected to the Internet.
Developed by some 4,000 high school grads who have become Minesweeper Certified Solitaire Experts, each Microsnot OS has included fewer obvious copies of Doom embedded in Word, and, less Easter Eggs that pop up in business correspondance during live Executive Conferences.
Serious questions abound and bets are being taken by bookies everywhere, as to when VISTA will actually be issued, being already 3 years AWOL! Vista is said to be an Acronym for Virus, Instability, Spyware, Trojans, and Adware.
There are currently 150,000 Microsoft Virus Definitions, that include spy-bots, ad-bots, malware, etc,
You're going to CRASH today, at least twice!

On the fly - Linux is a 'UNIX Clone which is a con-current, multi-processor, multi-tasking, and multi-user, system that processes hundreds of programs, games, files, databases, con-currently.
All resources are embedded in a tiny kernel that runs up to several hundred times faster through the processor(s), than Microstop ever could.
Linux runs 45,000 Microsoft computers, at MSN.com, Hotmail.com, and Microsoft.com, the Redmond Servers, and the 'Linux Labs'. Microsoft is a major Beta tester of many of the Distros, the tools and the processes in Linux, at the Corporate level.
Because the Root System Files that comprise the Linux 'system', are all locked behind a secure blockade, the entire OS is extremely tough to break into. Microsoft has tried, and failed, miserably, of course.
There are some 35 'proof of concept' exploits, that are relegated to the laboratory, in major universities who all now run Linux on their servers, and in their computer labs, classrooms.
All the Fortune 1,000 corporations use, and contribute to the development and use of Linux, as does 165 nations, and schools in most of the literate nations of the civilized world, the CIA, FBI, NASA, and NSA, who wrote the SELinux portions.
All movies since "TITANIC - 1997" have been created, rendered, edited, and/or animated, in Linux on Clusters.
Grassroots developers and contributors number in the millions, 78% of all internet servers, and 26% of all PCs are running Linux, at least some of the time. Dual- or multi- booting permits the user to run Microstop Windoze, just often enough to remind us of that abysmal failure! 23+ OSes can be booted. With over 800 Linux and BSD OSes, you'll want a few more drives!
http://pclinuxos.com is a great Desktop version of GNU/Linux!! 50X faster, on the same hardware, with 1900 LiveCD games, programs, apps! When installed, there are 5,000 applications, and transgaming has 1600 WIN32 games!

I'll take Microsoft to mean Windows, but Windows and Linux are both operating systems (OS). They are meant to give a way for users to control hardware, and give programs a way to control hardware.
Linux is actually just the core of an OS, called a kernel. The other applications are called GNU (an acronym meaning "GNU's not Unix"), and you will see it called GNU/Linux. Linux is meant to be like an OS called Unix, which was popular for use in servers. So Linux is designed after a server OS, and does very well as a server. Linux can be run graphically with a program called X, but was designed as a command line OS.
Windows is meant to be run as a GUI (Graphical User Interface). It also focuses more on the user, and backward compatibility.
One of the big points of Linux is it is free. Free is meant in more than one way. It doesn't cost anything (free) but you can also get the source code of Linux to change and modify as you wish (free). This is what people are referring to when they say Linux is free as in "Free speech". You can do whatever you want with Linux, unlike Windows, where you have to play by Microsoft's rules.
Advantages to Linux are it is free, and is designed after a server OS, so it does very well as a server and has security built into its core. A big disadvantage is there isn't a support line you can call up and say "fix this problem". Some company's offer support like this, but don't expect it for free.
Advantages to Windows are it is user friendly (or tries to be), and you can get support for it. Disadvantages are you don't have any control over the code and you can't do what you want with it. User's can't see the code and point out potential problems like they can with open source offerings.

Wow volumes could be writen on this. But il try and keep it short.
Cost:
Windows - You have to pay for
Linux - Free (Open source) and paid versions. Mainly free there are a few supported distributions tht you have to pay for eg. Red Hat
Ease of Setup:
Windows - Very Easy setup
Linux - Comparably technical, however many newer distributions are making it much easier to install.
Stability:
Windows - Varies user to user (most Windows users have a bone to pick)
Linux - Greater stability
Security:
Windows - Enterprise Versions offer improved security ( Windows Server 2003, Windows 2000) and recent versions Windows XP
Linux - More secure than Windows. It is argued that if Linux had as many users as Windows it would be a better target for virus writers, hackers etc. and be as vulnerable as Windows.
User Interface:
Windows - Excellent Graphical User Interface. Console/ Text interface (like dos) within GUI.
Linux - GUI and true Console based versions.
Drivers:
Windows - Generally easy to find drivers for hardware new & old
Linux - Usually a bit harder. It is easy to get drivers for new hardware. Usually hard to get drivers for older hardware.
Speed:
Windows - The GUI, background services and way Windows is written/coded are said to put unecessary drain on resources.
Linux - Faster on a machine with the same specs as a Windows machine. Some say the GUI is nowhere as visually pleasing as Windows so less resources, coding and background service are said to be more efficeint.
Freebies:
Windows - May come with trialware, but there are tons of Freeware on the web available. Most Windows software will have some cost, some very reasonable and others well......
Linux - Because of the Open source (programmers all over the world writing and adjusting the software all at no cost to you) nature of Linux it has a lot of good freeware from office productivity to photo editing bundled with it eg. OpenOffice.
Versions/Flavours:
Windows - All made by Microsoft
Linux - Different companies ( Knoppix, Red Hat, Mandrake etc.)
Custom:
Windows - Few versions compared to Linux
Linux - Tons of highly customizable versions. Eg. Damn Small Linux a version that can be installed on a jump drive.
Support:
Windows - Good built in help, website resources and broad user base for peer to peer suport.
Linux - Some say not as sufficient help as Windows, peer to peer support and website help.
This doesnt cover some of the more complex differences and is not aimed at techies (check the source link) just basics.
These are opinions expressed across the web and some of my own. These are not conclucive statments.

Education is good, because it teaches you how to learn, how to discipline your mind. Knowledge for a Christian is knowing the word, knowing your God, His nature, His will, His outlook on things. Wisdom is looking at things from God's perspective and putting them into action. Knowledge is great, but too much of it can puff you up if you don't counteract it with fruit of the Spirit. Ever know a person who's very knowledgeable, but has no temperance and no love? Their knowledge is almost useless in the long run. But wisdom? You find that and your soul shall live, because when you find wisdom, you find the way God Himself looks at a situation. Proverbs 3: By wisdom the Lord laid the earth’s foundations, by understanding he set the heavens in place; by his knowledge the watery depths were divided, and the clouds let drop the dew.
