Where would that leave his followers?
depends on what kind of follower there is. a common satanist belief is that there is no devil, there is no God. satan is simply a force, an animal instinct. Much of those believes are essentially worshippers of self. Guilty of pride. Which we all are guilty of pride, but some ask for forgiveness. For them, would it really matter? Because they bow to no one.
For those who actually worship lucifer as a deity, well....simply put: he wouldn't change his mind. However, they might.
I spoke with a satanist who claims the devil approached him, and asked him to bow down to him. He said he couldn't do it. I couldn't tell if he was sad about it or concerned he had taken it that far. It was a long conversation. His wife is a devout catholic. How strange is that.
Lucifer and his rebel angels rebelled because they refused to worship Jesus Christ. They refuse to have a human being be their king (Jesus) and queen (Mary). It is an issue of pride. They refuse to bow to what is supposed to be a lower creation (angels vs. a human). Meanwhile, if you examine christianity, it is the fact that God loves us so much he was willing to take on the form of a human creation. A human being. To be subjected to what we are subjected to and more. To allow the devil to use his powers to cause him horrendous pain. Simply so he could create a bridge to heaven for us. Why did God do it that way? Who knows. Ask him. Maybe the more you think about it and try to live it you'll understand.
p.s. When Jesus went to hell he did in fact gather up the faithful waiting for him in the darkness. Such as Moses, Aaron, etc.

In ancient Jewish tradition Satan is simply an angel doing the work that God assigned to Satan to do.
The word Satan means challenger. With the idea of Satan challenging us, or tempting if you will. This description sees Satan as the angel who is the embodiment of man's challenges. This idea of Satan works closely with God as an integral part of God plan for us. His job is to make choosing good over evil enough of a challenge so that it becomes clear to us that there can be only one meaningful or logical choice.
Contrast this to Christianity, which sees Satan as God's opponent. In Jewish thought, the idea that there exists anything capable of setting itself up as God's opponent would be considered polytheistic or setting up the devil to be an equally powerful polarity to god or a demigod.
Oddly, proof for The Christian satan/devil mythology is supposedly found in the ancient Jewish texts that were borrowed to create the bible. One can’t help but wonder how Christians came up with such a fantastically different interpretation of Gods assistant Satan in their theology.
Other hints about Satan’s role in human relations can be seen if you look at the name Lucifer. It meaning in the original tongue translates as Light bearer or light bringer. Essentially the bringer of enlightenment. The temptations of the Satan idea bring all of us eventually into Gods light. Hardly the Evil entity of Christian mythology.

Won't happen, Christianity needs Satan. They need the boggy man to keep everyone afraid of the alternative.
As far as his "followers" go, no there are not massive amounts of people there. A few morons who listen to too much heavy metal perhaps, but their harmless.
Now if you want to go lumping in people who don't worship God in the christian sense, then we have issues. I find it hard to worship something I don't believe in.

Satan is a man made invention to scare people into their religion. Do you really think there was a Satan for the billions of years life had been on this planet before humans arrived?

Such an interesting theory.
1) As far as I know in Islam they believe that Satan is serving to God. He is being evil, just because that's his job. If that's similar to what you meant, Satan's followers are going to hell.
2) I don't think that it has recently happened. If he decides to become righteous, so does his followers. As you can see many people are so far away from that. So, yeah, going to hell anyways.

Even though you pose a very interesting question, I am convinced that Satan will ALWAYS remain on the dark side and his hatred toward God and all that is righteous will be on the forefront of his heart, though I really doubt that Satan even has a heart.

well, the actual Church of Satan (not "devil worshippers" imagined by Christians) doesn't actually believe in any deity; they aren't so much a real religion as they are a satire / parody of existing popular monotheisms; it's also a social club (much like any real religion) and lively theatre for creative people with a flair for the dramatic

As far as we know there is no plan of salvation for fallen angels. I think Satan is screwed. Humans have a pretty sweet deal with Jesus dying on the cross to save us from hell and God's wrath, it's a kind offer, take it!

He cannot do what you are suggesting. It is a condition of his heart and he will not change. It is WHO he is from the most inward parts of himself. Get this.......Satan knows scripture, frontwards and backwards. He believes God is real and exists. He KNOWS God is good and righteous. He understands totally all the good aspects of God. It is not a matter of unbelief for him. HE WANTS WHAT GOD HAS and if he cannot get it, he will take as many of God's creation with him to "Tartarus." (not Hell or Hades, for that is merely the realm of the dead. We all go to death, or hell.) Satan is trying to prove something to God similar to the problem he tried to prove with Job. Satan told God that Job only served Him (God) because God had "fenced" him in with blessings. God told Satan to take all the blessings away and see, but do not take Job's life. Job stood firm. The very day he lost all of his possessions and all of his children, he said, "The Lord gives, and the Lord takes away, BLESSED BE the NAME of the Lord!" Satan wants us to rebel. That is all he wants. Rebellion against God, turning from God.
