When I see many women celebrities on TV, like on David Letterman or Jay Leno, especially the ones who wear nice dresses, most of them sit down with their legs crossed. I don't know why they sit like that. If you ladies do sit like that, can you explain why do sit that? It's that almost every women have a habit of how they sit.

Funny. I am actually sitting like that right now.
Guess when you grow up, and wear skirts and dresses as a little girl you are taught to cross your legs of course to not let things show. And it becomes habit. It is comfortable to do now. But you also do it in more formal settings to be proper, more feminine. Like Jay Leno the women are really on show and promoting themselves so they would cross their legs.
However, now that I'm finishing typing this I'm sitting like a guy. But I'm alone in a casual setting. Make sense?

Good manners & society determined that this is the way a 'lady' sits. Sitting with legs far apart or evenly slightly apart seems to be a no-no of good breeding. Another way for us to sit if one can't cross her legs is to sit with the knees firmly pressed together. However, with the way some are dressed you wonder why they bother to cross the legs or press them together at all.

My father is a "Hillbilly" in every sense of the word but he was a stickler about young ladies being just that LADIES. Especially when wearing a dress and of course we teach our little girls to watch themselves in dresses as not to expose our goodies. I'm 48 and love my jeans 'cause I don't HAVE to sit a certain way, how proper and prim...

Most women are taught that when you are wearing a dress you should keep your legs closed so you don't have spectators, it is just more comfortable to sit with them crossed as opposed to knees together.

Hopefully there mothers tried to teach them to be modest , because it would look odd if they sat with a dress on and there legs open for all to see. and besides some women do not even wear under-ware.. If they wore short dresses then i guess they would be advertising there willingness if they kept there legs open . so hope its out of modesty..

It is actually bad for your circulation, and it is bad for your posture, but it is a habit.

I think I picked it up because I'm always cold, and it is warmer this way: when my thighs are in close contact I don't loose heat from the surfaces that are touching.

No, it's not modesty - I wear jeans and still do it all the time. I wish I could un-learn this.

As a child I was taught that a lady should sit with knees and feet together or ankles crossed. It was not okay for knees or arms to be crossed.

One, if she is wearing a skirt or dress it's so noone can see between her legs. Second a woman looks much prettier with her legs crossed

It's a habit of some. Also, it's polite. WOmen aren't supposed to sit with their legs spread like men do.....that's gross.

It's lady-like and far more comfortable than sitting with your legs un-crossed.
