Before you even go for testing, you should consider some counseling. This is a very serious decision, and often counseling is required before donation anyway. You have a long life ahead of you- you may have children of your own that may need help,. and you have only 2 kidneys, and have to have at least one for yourself. A serious decision like this after having just discovered your natural father may not be in your tryue best interest. I would definately seek some professional counseling for this one.

For 19 years and you found your father..he wasn`t in your life for all those years. Try and get some counseling..You are too young to make this decision by yourself and you need to think of your own future and when you decide to have children.. Honey keep those 2 kidneys as you may need them yourself. Here is someone talking to you with 1 kidney and don`t do it!!Live and Love your life and the rest of your life!!

A good place to ask questions is a forum for living donors http://www.livingdonorsonline.org - there are lots of people who have similar experinces that can answer your question. My daughter is 20 and on dialysis, waiting for a kidney transplant. It's very generous of you to do this for you father, but if his health is stable you can give yourself time to learn more. Here's my daughter's story, if you are interested http://www.xanga.com/i_korn - Good luck!

I couldn't just sit around and do nothing like my doctors suggested.

They didn't want me to do anything or to take herbs or herbal remedies, but I had to try something - they just wanted me to do dialysis!

This program allowed me to take control of my health. I went from Stage 4 to Stage 3 kidney disease.

It was easy to do and my BUN, creatinine and anemia are all in better ranges.

Reversing Your Kidney Disease?

It will not affect your life in any way.... One fifth of one kidney is actually all we really need to survive...
I think it is really noble that you would do this for someone you barely know.
Talk to doctors about this and ensure you feel comfortable and understand what is involved, but usually having only one kidney is not going to affect you in the slightest.

You won't be able to drink alcohol because it would be difficult for your body to get rid of it. There isn't much your life would be limited to.
