depends on the type of top/doors you have.
like was said earlier, many of the YJ doors have a sharp 'corner' at the top, that fits with the soft-top. if you have an aftermarket top, like a bestop, they instead have a curved opening at the top.
you have to match the doors with the tops you have. there are hard door 'uppers' which will fit in the halfdoors alot of jeeps have, which have the sharp corner. and i know that for a while they made hard-doors with the corner.

No. if you look at the top rear corner of your soft doors, they are squared off. Hard doors are rounded off there so it would be letting in wind, rain, etc. Also, the plastic frame around the door jambs that holds the soft top in place interfere with the closing of hard doors. If you want hard doors, you'll have to get a hard top.
Newer TJ Wranglers ARE able to run soft top/hard doors, but trust me, this is my 3rd Wrangler, you cant put hard doors on with a soft top on a YJ.

many 90's jeeps came with both hard tops and doors, and both can be purchased from an aftermarket retailer like JC Witney, but to my knowledge both the top and doors have to be switched in a pair

I think you can but you will to get "Door Surrounds" for it. They are plastic pieces that attach to the sport-bar and provide the proper fit required for the doors.
