I have a male sun counure. I searched everywhere till I found him and believe it or not he was with in 10 miles of my home. Sometimes they are just hard to find. He was 12 weeks old when I brought him home and we have had a few fights till I I taught myself how to take care of him and control him. Conures will try to control you and will drive you crazy if you allow them to and if you are not smarter then the bird is.
This November he will be 2 years old and he has been saying his name for about a year and a half. He tells me good morning and hello and nite nite. He can say moma come here and he can yell so loud that you can hear him outside the house. He will hang upside down from the sugar cane when I clip it to his cage and try to chew it off. He plays so hard he will fall off his toys. He has run of the house and ropes hanging off his cage to he can get around. He tries to bite the cat every chance he gets. And he flirts with my girlfriend and plays rough with me. He is potty trained to go back to his cage and he will let you know it is time to go potty. He loves to climb inside my shirt and put his back on my chest and hang onto the collar of my shirt with the top of his head on my chin while we mow the lawn.
Great birds but they will chew holes in your shirts and with one chomp tear a hunk out of the window shades or could easily bite a small child's finger off. My sun loves both my lady and me, and will pick some of our friends to go to. But most people he will bite and bring blood.
They are lots of fun but need to be on you an hour or so a day and all day if you got the time. They make a big mess and will rip their toys apart.
That is a sun conure. If you want a quiet and loving bird get a Yellow perl tiel. I have one of them and it is the sweetest bird in the world. Comparing a teil to a sun conure is like a poodle to a pitbull.
Oh one more thing about the Golden Conure that was spoke about above. I would love to have a couple of them but the best price you will find if you can even find it that cheap is around 2000 USD each. Then they are protected and you have to file to own one. They can be recalled for breading which means you could lose your bird as well. I feel they are a bird that has reached the end of its evolution and are not interested in reproducing. Maybe that can be changed and I hope so.

I have a 5 year old Sun, and he is a sweetie! He definitely is goofy, as in my opinion they are the biggest clowns of the Conures, but he can be loud! I was blessed that mine only yells when he gets scared, or knows I'm in the room and not paying attention to him! I've heard that they can be "one person" birds, but my bird will go to anyone after a minute or two of checking them out, but he does not like anyone under 4 feet, so basically all kids! Other than them being a little noisy, typically any Conure from the Aratinga family are the louder ones, I absolutely love my sun, and would love to get another when I have the room! Good luck!

Buying a bird is definitely NOT something to enter in to lightly, and certainly not something you want to do based on what is "most popular." Birds are much more demanding pets than dogs or cats. It is essential that you thoroughly educate yourself before getting any bird.
Birds have long lifespans. You could have this bird for the next 30 years. Are you prepared to make that commitment? Do you live in a house or apartment? Conures are LOUD. I mean, ear piercing. Different species vary in just how vocal they are, but they are generally not a good pet if you live in an apartment block--unless you want to get kicked out.
They also require a lot of care and attention. Birds aren't individual animals, and without a lot of interaction with you they have a tendency to go neurotic and engage in negative behaviors like feather plucking.
Are you ready to throw out all your non-stick cookware, air fresheners, lots of cleaning products, etc etc? All these things can be fatal to your bird. A bird rescue often won't even consider you as an adopter until you throw out all that teflon.
Do you even know what breeders are in your area? That's the first question you need to answer before you know what breeds you have to choose from. You're also going to have to find an avian vet, which may not be convenient to you.
If after all that you still think you're interested in finding out more about getting a conure, here is some good info:

The Golden Conure (Guaruba guarouba), recently re-named from Aratinga guarouba is also known as the Queen of Bavaria's Conure. This bird is not the easiest to breed but is the best to own.Their temperament is wonderful. Their call is unique. Their coloration can only be compared to a bright sunny day! The Golden conure is medium sized parrot ( 35 cm) 13.5 inches with substance that compares in size to an Amazon. They have a large beak and can chew wood extensively. Goldens originats from Brazil where its native home is endangered because of extensive deforestation.
In the wild they seem to prefer to stay in families. The young stay with the parents until they are sometimes two or older. However not many studies have been done on this species as to how it lives in the wild. Young Goldens do not become fully colored until they are 18 to 20 months of ageand well after their molt. The juvenile is washed with a splash of green over the body and head. The Head is the last to change to the bright golden color. Eyes of the Golden seem to be plum colored but there has never been any real mention of this amoungst breeders.

I have the most adorable Sun Conure called Aussie born Australia Day....the Sun Conure is the most brightest of the species and certainly have their definite personality...they are so easy to bond with...she is toilet trained and take her everywhere I can. they are affectionate and funny. When you have a good bond with them they are like little children rather than just a bird...People often stop me to tell me how gorgeous my Aussie is and for a moment I think they mean me!!! She travels with me and is an excellent passenger and is an excellent guard bird...As long as you don't mind the occasional loud squawk. She is definitely my baby and has been for the last two and half years. Buy one from a breeder rather than a Pet Shop, also start bonding with them from the age of two weeks if at all possible. Hope this helps, you will not regret your purchase. Good luck

OH MY! I would say a Sun in most desired, and maybe a blue crown is one most likely to see someone with. But all are VERY loud, and many beautiful birds are given away are set loose because people want quiet birds. They shouldn't have chosen a hookbill at all then, most conures as well as parrots in general, are loud. If your good with that, you will find almost all conures are funny and do crazy tricks and dances, and are truly great joys to the TRUE bird lover.

I had a maroon-bellied conure. Very similar to the green cheek. They are the smaller of the conures, and tend to be a lot quieter. Sun conures are one of the most popular. A lot of conures can be very loud, so if this is a consideration, you might want one of the quieter species. Conures are medium sized, very playful and if hand raised, very sweet.

I know of 2 kinds of conures - because they have lived with us.
The white eyed (green) conure was a male and he had a very playful personality. Always doing tricks like hanging by his beak, or by one foot, and swinging on a swing. He could whistle too. He loved to be held and was very loving. Liked to sit on my shoulder and watch tv. Not shy at all. I loved him so much - but he is living with someone else at the moment. He made a croaking noise all day and sometime he would make a cawing sound but it was not too annoying.
Now we have a sun conure - she is a beautiful bird. I think they are very popular because of their brilliant colours - she looks like the sun surrounded by a rainbow. But she screams so loud it pierces my ears if I'm standing close to the cage. Sometimes she will do it alot other times she is mostly quiet. She was from an abusive home (they left her in a basement with a barking dog and she was ignored alot) so she is timid and shy. I had to catch her in her cage to get her to come out in the begining, but now she comes out easy. She loves to sit on my shoulder and kiss my ear and cheek. She is very loving and she loves to "groom" me by licking my face. She loves to be out of her cage and she loves her beak kissed.
If you get a young bird - a baby and handle them alot they will be very tame and easy to train. If you ignor your bird they will get agressive and timid. Conures tend to think of their owner as their mate and will get very jealous if you give your attention to another bird or even if you kiss someone in front of them. One time I was holding my sun conure and I kissed my boyfriend and she bit my finger as hard as she could and screamed at me. They are very attached to their "mate". They tend to bond to only one care giver - the one who gives them the most attention and will possibly be mean to anyone else who tries to get close to them.
Before you buy a bird - look into bird adoption. There are alot of parrots out there that need homes because their owners don't know how to care for them or can not tollerate the screaming noises that they make.
