looking for a bird hunting dog and a pet, have settled on an english setter and am looking for a breeder...

Go to a field trial or hunting test to meet breeders. You could also try a dog show. You might get a better hunter from someone who breeds for performance and not only show dogs.

Take a look at Cover Dogs in the American Field Mag.. Also NSTRA and hunt tests in your area. I'm biased but I like Long Gone, or Grouse Ridge line breeding in the pedigree. Birdy and biddable dogs. On the NSTRA classifieds is an ad from Jim Breece. I have seen the female Evie and she is a good one the sire is Berg Bros. Jack his record speaks for itself. Also don't be afraid to look into field trial dogs you can always take the run out of them you can't put run into them.
