No, Lutherans are not Catholics.
Lutherans are descended from Martin Luther, a Catholic Augustinian friar who worked at the University of Wittenburg in the early sixteenth century. Among other things, Luther believed that the Church should not benefit monetarily from the sale of indulgences, while could be bought for remission of time spent in purgatory for either the buyer or anyone else the buyer chose. Further, Luther could not accept universal salvation; if God's justice was to be absolute, some would have to be damned.
The development of Lutherans since Luther proposed reforms for the Church in 1517 are many and are better researched by asking a Lutheran minister.

To my understanding, Lutherans are very much like Catholics, except they differ in one huge regard: they do not believe in the concept of a pope.
I was raised in a devoutly Catholic household and attended mass every week. Lutheran services seem more or less the same, although their preachers are a lot ... more ... personable?
Their origins came about when Martin Luther protested the corruption in the Catholic Church's organization. Priest sold "Get out of Purgatory free" slips for money and often had carnal relations.
It was a movement that swept through Germany and basically spawned Protestantism.

Nope. Lutherans and Catholics are not the same religion. Lutherans don't recognize the leadership of the pope.

No. My mother goes to a Catholic church, she is a Catholic. My brother and his wife go to a Lutheran church, they are Lutherans. They are both Christians but they go to different kinds of churches. I went to my brothers church and it was a lot like going to a Catholic church so I can see why you would ask. There is a lot of kneeling and stuff just like the Catholics do but some things are different.

Catholic big C typically refers to the Roman Catholic church, catholic with a little c just means universal. WE ARE ALL CHRISTIANS. But Lutherans are a different denomination of Christian.
The Lutherans were formed in the northern European countries when many Christians broke off from the Church in Rome because of belief in Martin Luther's Theses

No, they are different. They are somewhat similar, but have differences.
Martin Luther was Catholic though and didn't create Lutheranism like a lot of people think.

Lutherans are Lutherans. Catholics are Catholics.
Lutherans WANT to be Catholics- 'cause after all- Luther never wanted to start some new church- it was started after he died.
But Lutherans can't wrap themselves around the fullness of truth the Catholic Church contains, because it would mean they couldn't use their own relativistic ideas of the truth.

No, the Lutheran church is part of the Episcopalian or Protestant religion. They are Christians, like Catholic people are.
