While the use of viruses that specifically infect and kill cancer cells have and continue to be studied, there are several hurdles that need to be overcome in order for this treatment to be successful. The most problematic being the body's inherent ability to recognize and kill any foreign bodies regardless of whether they are helpful, harmful or neutral. The immune system quickly learns how to build up an immunity to these oncolytic viruses and render them harmless before they can be successful.
