He says that they won't send him over cuase he'll be repairing helicopters? We know that they may send him over there to do the repairs but could they send him after bootcamp? or would he have to do his training first then go overseas?

Alright Hun, I'll be telling you this from personal experience. Everybody that's in the US Military will deploy! No matter what MOS he's getting. Repairing helicopter are a 100% guarantee to deploy! He'll have to go to Basic Training and AIT before he could be deployed! I hope that this helps!

He has to go to boot camp first. After boot camp he should get to come home for a few days, then he returns to training. I think the Army calls it AIT (don't quote me I wasn't in the Army). After that they will send him to his school where he will learn to repair the helicopters and once that is done he gets sent to his unit. And once there it depends on the rotation cycle on when he goes overseas. They aren't (usually) going to send anyone without training anywhere, if the soldier doesn't know his job, whats the point of him being there. Why doesn't he think they'll send him? He may want to talk to his recruiter some more and learn a little bit about the commitment he is about to make.

bootcamp, then training (AIT) (where ever they train helicopter mechanics) then he gets assigned a unit then they send him where ever the unit is needed, most likely overseas, usually its about a year where ever he's sent then its back home to the states. you can go on goarmy.com and look up his mos (job) and see the different bases where they are trained to give you some idea where he might train. as for where his unit will go after AIT, he will be able to log on to his AKO site and look it up but usually it isn't available until near the end of gold phase which is the latter half of AIT....good luck and HOOAAH! < you'll be hearing that alot when graduation day comes !

he must first complete all his training, which could take a while, depending on how long it is. besides.. when you say overseas, there is ALSO the possibility of him being stationed someplace like Korea or Germany.. and those are certainly overseas.
Anyone enlisting in the Army or Marine Corps right now can pretty much expect to spend at least one deployment in the litterbox beofore thei rfirst term is up. and the Navy, Coast Guard and Air Force aren't exactly immune either.

Order of events = Basic Training, Advanced Individual Training, then his Unit of assignment.
As a helicopter repairer it is possible that he will do a tour overseas.

Well, it will be pretty safe to assume that he will be going to a school to repair those helicopters before sending him anywhere to actually repair them! They wont teach him his trade in bootcamp. So, if the school is located in the states, he should be there for a while. After that, anything can happen.

First he will go to bootcamp. Then AIT. But, after that, it will depend on where he is assigned.
One thing that I do know is this. The areas that are still considered 'hot zones', they need experienced mechanics.
How do I know this?
I've got a friend the was in the IRR (Marines). He just got called up for active duty (diesel mechanic) and he is being deployed to the Middle East.

Put it this way. He is living in denial. I spent 4 years of a 5 year stint in a helicopter unit stationed in Germany, deployed to Kosovo and Iraq. He will do training stateside but unless he has a stateside duty station in his contract he could be sent overseas.

No, they will not send him directly after bootcamp. They will send him to AIT (advanced individual training) where he'll learn his skill then they may or may not send him. It depends on what unit he is going to. Does he know yet? I could probably tell you if you knew that much.
His AIT is where I'm at right now, Ft Eustis, VA. Not a bad place I must say.

Yeah, he's going sometime in his first four years. Might not be that first year or two, depending on what unit he's in, but he's going. We need chopper mechanics over there too. Heck, we need them over there even more. He'll finish basic training and AIT (advanced training) then he'll go to an active unit. Once he gets to his unit of assignment, he'll deploy whenever that unit does.
