I let our quaker out all day long. She only flys a few times nad returns to her cage. She doesn't chew on anything and never knocks anything over. I always make sure all the doors in the house are shut and windows closed. I don't see anything wrong with it as long as you are careful. I have owned and raised birds for about 14 years.

You have to be careful they don't fall in the toilet and drown, or get caught in a ceiling fan, or crash into mirrors/windows.
If you want your bird to be tame and close to you you will want to clip the wings so they cannot fly. I adopted my parrot from an abusive home - but if I could have my way she would go back to the jungles of south america and fly around find a mate and have little babies and live a full life. But since she is a pet and can't go out in the wild. I take as good of care of her as I can. I want her tame so I can pet her and hold her. Otherwise she would be a very lonely bird and very unhappy. So, I don't let her fly around.

You sound like you think the birds want to get a way? They really don't. My birds are my friends and when I come home they hang off the side of the cage wanting me to come get them. If I don't they will climb down the ropes I have hanging and come to me. They are so happy to see me or my girlfriend that they wiggle like little doggies.
When a bird gets out side most would come back home if they could find their way back. The problem is when they fly they are seeing things from above and have no idea of which roof top is home so they wander and starve to death unless they can stumble on to a bird feeder somewhere. Then if they are lucky someone will take them in so they will not freeze to death when teh winter comes. They are from a place that is warm year around and don't know they should fly south. It is not in their breeding.
Your birds loves you and likes to have food handed to them and a nice home to live in with people to play with. I know mine does.
Maybe you should take your dog and cat out in the wilderness and kick them out and drive off and leave them. They would be just like a bird and starve todeath if they are not eaten by something else. They don't know how to live out there. Would you be able to live away from the towns and citys? Where would you get that bottle of Pepsi you are sipping on? There would be no place to get a happy meal or a tv dinner or no stove to cook your food on or any way to store your food. You would die in a few days time. So go set your kids and wife or hubby free some where in the middle of nowhere and see if you make it.

Because the birds in the pet trade are not from the areas where they now live. And they would not survive long in the harsher climates.
The key is ensuring you pet has a good quality life.

Lice
Deforestation
Malnourishment
Being endangered in general (most kinds of pet birds are; see CITES)
Bacterial infection
High mortality rate
Shortened life-span
In addition: why not let domestic cats and dogs free? They're not meant to be vaccinated, fed formulated diets and kept free of parasites.

Most birds we buy as pets, are actually tropical in origin. If we let them go outside, we'd just be signing a death sentence, because they wouldn't have the least clue about where to find food, let alone be able to survive our cold winters.

They're domestic, not wild. They probably are not indigenous to your area, and therefore you would be introducing a non-native species into the habitat. Around here, we have hawks and eagles. They would be killed.
