There are three types of recognized crops contrary to what GitEmGang eluded to. They are:
Military/Pet Crop:
** This ear is shorter in length and has a wider base (bell). Usually quick to stand. Shortened period of posting.
Medium Crop:
** A longer ear with a little less bell.
Show Crop:
** This crop is longer and a little narrower than the other two crops and generally requires the longest period of posting.
FYI -- Dobe's ears are usually done when the dog is between 7 and 9 weeks of age. The ear cropping procedure should not be performed after nine weeks because the ear cartilage is already "set" to lay flat and the blood vessels are too large.
However, I've cropped one Dobes ears at 12 weeks of age, and while it took some time to get them to stand (partially because of age and because the vet cut too deeply into the cartilage of one ear), they did ultimately stand.
That having been said, make sure that ear cropping is *ONLY* be done by those who have a great deal of experience with this procedure. This surgery should performed by someone who specializes in the cropping of ears.
Hope this information helps.

If you are going to do it. Make sure you go to an experienced ear cropping vet. They are not easy to come by.(and also expensive) I've seen alot of botched up crop jobs done by vets. I would get a referal from a Dobe show breeder and also ask the vet for alot of references.
Cropped ears are ALOT of work.
I personally think Dobe's look stunning with a good ear crop. They also look nice natural. Would I do it to my own dog? No..just because I have seen so many messed up ears. They say if it is done properly, it is not as painful. I'm not too sure about that.
Cropping is illegal in many other countries, and they are trying to ban it here in the US too. I know they were trying to pass a law in NY to ban crop/dock, but havent heard anymore on it.

If you can find a vet that lays the ears down on the side of the head/face to measure and cut, they will be beautiful/sized to the head-not cut too short.

None, if I had to do it. I think Dobies with ears and tail au naturel are adorable.
But a friend's red Dobie guide dog had something that was called an old-style show crop, and it looked really good. It's hard for me to describe it, but hopefully, the person you take the dog to will know and can show you a picture.

No. the factor is the breed standards in coach. additionally they're a working canine so the docked tail use to be so as that they do no longer harm it. maximum searching and a few working canine breeds have traditionally executed this while the breed grew to become into used for a particular objective. uncertain what objective cropping the ears might serve. i recognize the bull terriers grew to become into cropped so as that they do no longer rip their ears while searching inspite of the undeniable fact that it style of feels pick to me that a dobermans ear might nonetheless be actual ripped in thick brush. wager it truly is basically for presence. yet no you do no longer might desire to dock/crop them. it is your determination.

None. It is an unnatural, very painful procedure to put a puppy through. I don't believe in them. I work for a vet.
