my wife and i buy brown eggs that are certified free range. i'm told this statement isn't worth the carton it's printed on, bc the chickens only get 15 mins a day outside. is this true? or am i actually contributing to humane farming?

If they only get 15 minutes outside, then they are not free range.

Yes you're helping, but you're right - you have to check that they actually comply with the regulations. I buy free range eggs which have won awards at agricultural shows, because I figure they have really been checked out.

By the way, brown eggs make no difference - brown and white eggs just come from different breeds.

I don't think you are helping chickens by buying any type of egg. If Tyson or who ever can't sell the eggs they will possess the chickens.

My mom and dad always kept chickens and they had a wide open door and a large open field to pluck every last strand of grass out of. We got large, small, brown and white eggs. But when the hen starts getting too old you have to cook the hen because she can no longer lay eggs or slow down and the younger the better tasting and the older the bird the tougher the meat is. So we kept new chicks birthing and slaughtered the older birds.

Think about it.. What would we do with 200 billion old dieing chickens a year? We have to use them before they get too old. If the bird is a pet it is not the same because it is a friend and is not a working bird.

My answer would be that unless you actually know a person who has chickens and they give your their eggs, who really knows whats going down at the ol' chicken farm? I know that they are not as 'free' as 'free-range' sounds. I am pretty sure that if you visited a 'free-range' farm you would probably still be pretty disgusted by what you see.

I would try to get some from a local farmer if you can. Then you could see just how they are being treated. We call them "yard eggs" here and they are SO much better than mass-produced ones. the yolks are vivid yellow and much larger, and they taste better, too. I am sure it has something to do with the fact that they are not as stressed as the mass-producers.

Also, brown eggs are no different than white ones besides the coloration.

anything is more humane than non -free- range, even if it is a bit of freedom per day, visit iamscruelty.com aside from exposing the dog food king for the cruel monsters that they are, it will show you links to other animal horrors, including the way chickens are treated when people only care to make money.
