I have been teaching for 4 years now and am very successful (at 27 I am the Head of the History dept at a high school). I love my job and have loved the six week holiday (!) but I am getting very anxious about going back. I know its natural and I feel like this every year but it is worse this year.
I feel panicked and start to breathe badly and cannot sleep. I know that it will be fine and I dont have that much work to do when I get back but how can I get some perspective?
PS I dont want to offend but I am not religious so prayer etc wont help.

Hi there Caroline,
It sounds to me that you are beginning to develop anxiety and panic attacks and if you don't get a fast grip on it now, it will grow into a full-blown disorder - you'll end up being such a nervous wreck, you won't be able to function to go work at all!
I know that teaching is a stressful job. You're actually my age and my partner happens to be a school teacher like you.
Positive reassurance and influences around you will be helpful but the rest is up to you to conquer these negative thoughts and feelings.
What you need to do is re-evaluate your thinking patterns. Replace negative thoughts and feelings with positive reassuring one's.
When you feel anxious and panicky about this, grab a pen and paper and write out what you feel. Write down all your negative emotions and thoughts.
Re-read it and rationalize with yourself.
Then re-write positive affirmations.
All the best to you!

You can prepare to the best of your ability and then don't worry. You know you will have good and bad days with the kids and the staff and parents so don't stress. You may be having the beginning of anxiety or panic attacks. Try to breath deeply and slowly and think about something happy when it happens. If it gets worse see your dr. I taught and I have anxiety and know how you are feeling! Not to hurt your feelings but prayer can help. Let your first prayer be to ask Jesus into your heart and recieve His peace.Best wishes for a great year and eternity!

Very Normal. I once had a job in the biotec. industry that made me so very anxious. I would actually cry on Sunday before the work week would start. I did enjoy working in laboratory and doing my Chemistry work but, this particular job and environment made me very stressed.
The obvious is something needed to change in my work i.e. start looking for another job or find a new roll with in the company. This takes time. So, for the time being find some balance. For me that was exercise regularly and take time to do things you enjoy outside of work. Try to always have something to look forward to so that you do not have to dwell on the negatives with your job. And, for the long term if your job is stressing you out this much I think you should look for something else. JMHO Good Luck and it'll get better if you look for change :-)

Focus on what you like abt being a teacher and the thing that makes your vocation fulfilling. Also, take some time off from work and have a hobby, play a sport, walk in a park or do something that you like

You can still pray even if you're not religious.
Just think about the fact that you HAVE that long vacation, and you also get holidays off. Many people do not have those benefits.
After the first week, you'll be fine.
Love, Jack.

"Teach, Touch the Future, Change the World".... that's the way I looked at it when I taught preschool, granted it's different then high school..but then again some days maybe not. I even had a shirt made that said that..just remember you hold the future of every child in your hand...

i will be a future teacher 2 1/2 years from now that is why i am interested to your question...it's good that you have a vacation for you to relax and get in touch with yourself...maybe there is something bothering you that is why you're feelin' like that!,....dont be too serious, just go on with your life and if you really love teaching then you can do anything you want to do...
dont be too hard on yourself...be optimistic...,,,and i guess music can help you to relax...(hope you don't mind...)
oops...i just want to share with you the teachers motto:
Teachers...teach minds, touch hearts and transform lives.
hope it inspires you!

Try to focus on the most positve memories you have from the previous year. Tell yourself that things will be ok, and you will have no stress. Other than that you might want to talk to someone.
