i think that you should follow him outside and leave a threating note on his wind shield on how him cutting in line made you late to the hospital where you were going to give your kidney to your grandma, and now she is dead. he wouldn't know that, that didn't actually happen and maybe he would think before he acted.

Simply tell them that you and a bunch of other people were there before him. If he was originally in line, but had no items on the conveyor belt, then he's s.o.l. and needs to go to the back of the line.
Say something like: "Excuse me! But there's a line up and this is the beginning not the end! Please go to the back."
Make sure to say it nice and loud so others around you will hear.
I've had some one ask me while I was at the bank (business line, so it's pretty short) if I could hold her place while she made a quick phone call. I told her that if she hurried and I wasn't up next in line that she would get her spot back. Otherwise, she'd have to go to the back of the line.

Just tap them on the shoulder and say loudly "Hey pal, you seem lost, the back of the line is THAT way" and point to the end of the line.
If they dont move, just say "HEY - I wasnt joking, cutting in line might work for you with other chumps but you are NOT cutting in front of ME".
If they still dont move or try to ignore you then it is definitely ok for you to push back in front of them.
Dont worry about anyone being embarrassed other than the line cutter - the other people in line who say nothing are just too scared to, but inside theyll be cheering that you had the guts to say it for them.
Oh and by the way - Id pay good money to see you tackle a line cutter!!!

Nobody likes people who cut in line. However, tackling the offender is a pretty good way to get yourself in trouble.
Perhaps a whispered comment about the rudeness of such actions, and a warning glare, would be a better way to get your point across?

I would make a loud comment about rude people that cut in line to someone close by. Not much good but it lets you vent a little. Do not tackle anyone though.

I've never had that happen at the supermarket. It's usually been at outdoors events, rides or fairs, etc.
I feel just like you do, it makes me very angry. But tackling them will get you arrested for assault. Not worth it.
I have actually confronted people for this. Stand like 6 inches away, look them in the eye and say, "I'm sorry, but I, and the rest of these people, have been waiting for ___ minutes here, and you are not going to cut in."
Embarrassed the heck out of my husband, and sometimes they just ignore me, but at least they are not totally getting away with it, because it embarrasses them, too.

Tell them very aggressively, "yo, mr., back of the line!!!" if that doesn't work walk right in front of them and when they try to give you ****, "what?!!!, you got a problem, you didn't seem to have a problem when this (point to the guy) as$hole cut right infront of me". If that doesn't work, just leave and kick their **** outside.

It would be ideal but then again that would make us just as rude as them. It's just better to confront them and point them to the end of the line.

First try to get their attention by firmly saying, "Excuse my, I/We were here first, the end of the line is back there...". If they try to give you smack after that, then you tackle them.
