People seem to have this idea that scientists produce all of these horrible things (weapons, disease, etc.) The fact is that scientists produce as many good things as bad (give or take), but the bad things are either more noticeable or are preferred over the good things. Examples are SUVs, solar cells, atomic weapons and the bubonic plague.
Yes, scientists (engineers, more specifically), invented SUVs, which are among the many items contributing to the destruction of our environment and the rapid consumption of unrenewable resources. On the other hand, scientists also invented solar cells, which take an abundant resource (sun's energy) and turn it into something useful (you could also say something similar about wind power, hybrid vehicles, etc. So why are SUVs more noticeable? Well, that's because people are really concerned with what kind of car they drive and don't give a **** about the consequences. People are careless, inconsiderate and self-absorbed. There is no aesthetic, monetary or status advantage to be gained by using wind power.
Moving on to nuclear weapons, scientists invented these and they kill people. Scientists also, however, invented vaccines for polio, the plague, measles, etc. It would be interesting (and impossible) to determine whether WMDs developed by scientists are responsible for taking as many lives as vaccines and medicine have saved. But I digress.
Ultimately, it will be the use of technology by the wrong people who end the world. In the mean time, people will continue to blame the scientists (whom they abhor as elitists) for ruining the world whereas the real problem is the ignorance of the masses and their refusal to accept their own culpability.

Scientist will not end the world. The invention/discovery of scientists will lead to the end of the world when it fallen to wrong hands.
I stongly believe that vast majorities of the scientists have good intentions. They want to produces or discover something that for the better of man kind.
Well, some of them are for the fames and for the profit but they do feel proud and good about making something for the better future.
There are many things that we don't know about. If they don't perform testing and experiements, how can they improve ?
There are times that something bad will be created but more often there are good things that comes along.
If we just stop anyone from doing any research because we afraid someone is going to knowingly or unknowingly create something destructive, the mankind may not be safer either.
Consider all these virus and dieases, they are evolving themselves. They are becoming more resistive to the current medication we have. We stop researching but they don't stop evolving. It will one day makes us defenseless.
I strongly believe that our research institution and personnels has strait and considerate practices guideline in place. In the event they discover something that is very destructive, they can easily put it under control and contained. So i think you should feel safe about it.

I believe that science has the power to both better and destroy our quality of life on this planet. It only depends who's in control of that power and what is the motive behind the research. If the most powerfull people on Earth think only in means of profit, then they will use science in order to suck the life out of the world. Yet, if the world leaders believed in a Utopic and hollistic way of life where balance and equality is the basis of their motivation to create a peacefull climat with the rest of nature and mankind, then we are safe.
But, you don't have to be a scientist yourself to figure out that world leaders are much to disconnected from the real world that they don't care about the damage they cause by abusing science for their personal gain.
So, my personal opinion is that, yes, science will be our undoing unless, by some miracle, the next world leader elected has a consciense.

in the initiating, scientists don't have self assurance this theory. it truly is depending off the Mayan calendar, which says that for the period of our modern time we are in the fifth (or fourth, counting on what you study) 'international.' the different worlds were destroyed by using an excellent flood, yet they say that this international will bring about hearth. truly they have self assurance that the organic beings will move on and the impure will be destroyed. in the millennium, it changed into drastically believed that each and each one the pcs couldn't bypass previous the 365 days 1999 and ought to reset. yet they did not, of route.

The world is close to spherical shape. Good scientist always think of ways to make our life easier and they have a habit is to develop something which somebody hasn't, and there engineer is to use the formula formulated by scientist to put in a good or bad product.
I guess scientist isn't that bad afterall, but is the greed of human to put the formula into the product. Down the line, i guess money is the one that have the says of all this development.
For instance, science to unlock genetic codes. If somebody have a lot of money and afraid to die, he will have invest on this study, and hence hiring lots of scientist.
In fact, your question of scientist going to end the world isn't correct. It is logical from the science point of view. But, if we move 2 steps up, you will see another context. MONEY ENDS THE WORLD.

I think science and scientists will save the world if anything. I believe most scientists (if not exactly all) do what they do in order to help other people. While everyone has a right to be concerned about where advancements in science are leading, I am more concerned about the lack of understanding of what science is about by many people in this world.

A random mutation in an airborne virus could end us just as quickly. Scientists aren't as haphazard as you seem to believe, and bioengineering humans is a long way away.
Of course, you mention a "beautiful plan." I assume you take exception to men messing with God's plan more on principle than rationality. I see it as men reviewing and editing natural situations which are often flawed.

Interesting.. The world will end when it ends.. Will scientists be the cause of it.. In a way yes.. as they will be able to predict the end of the world.. so... it's a bit like the chicken and egg question.
with a bit of "I think, therefore I am" thrown in.

I disagree with your premise. It can't be any worse than what it already is right now!
At least scientists are making their best effort to be a part of the solution instead of being a part of the problem.
Have fun but be safe.
