First the disease originated in Africa and was brought over due to increased global travel (not necessarily bad, unless you are a eco-brat). Once it arrived in the US, then the mosquito bites the infected person and then spreads the disease via blood mixing. It is similar to how AIDS is spread with dirty needles.

By biting a animal , usually a bird or a person, with west Nile first then you second. They "share" the blood taken first with you when they take yours. Kinda like STDs, share and share alike!
