It sounds like you are referring to Sciatica pain.

True Sciatica is caused by lateral deviation of the L4 articular disc which compresses the nerve root and causes pain that starts in the low back, radiates through the gluteul (butt muscles) and down to the knee or past it. Rare but it happens.

What often gets diagnosed as sciatica and is more common is Piriformis Syndrome. Same symptoms but different, and simpler to fix, cause.

The piriformis muscle is one of six small muscles in the hip deep to the 3 gluteul muscles.
When the piriformis becomes overly tight (hypertonic) it can impinge and squeeze the sciatic nerve, causing pain that starts in the hip and radiates down the hamstring muscle. Hypertonicity has many causes. It can stem from injury, direct impact, sitting too much, muscle overuse or lack of balanced exercise and stretching.

I would suggest going to see a Neuromuscular Therapist or other well trained deep tissue massage therapist that can release your hip muscles in general and the piriformis in particular. If they know what they're doing the pain should clear up almost immediately. The therapist should also be able to teach you some simple stretches you can do at home to prevent this from happening again.

I've succesfully treated many people who've been diagnosed with arthritis of the hip or Sciatica and have seen their symptoms clear up completely in one or two sessions of deep muscle massage.

Hope this helps you.

There is no reliable treament for Sciatic neverve problems. As a chronic mild suffer Rest is the cure for me. Advil help a lot. Physo can be of benefit.
If the sciatic nerve is pinched and the pain in the leg is from the nerve (radicular pain) then this is a correct use of the term sciatica.
If the pain is referred to the leg from a joint (referred pain) then using the term sciatica is technically incorrect

I personally suffer. I went to various MDs and got various test done to find out I had Degenerative Disc Disease that complicated into compression of sciatic nerve with inflammation. I got relief by going to Chiropractor. The physical therapist I work with gave me some exercises, the MDs gave me Bextra(since removed from market), and I still use ice therapy to my lower back. Yoga has also helped me.
Hope you find what works fore you.

Try an inversion table? You can get one for about $100.00. Also you can try yoga. There are lots of moves just for that nerve.
My husbands Chiropractor didn't have good things to say about the inversion table. But, my husband hasn't seen him in a year (due to the help from the table)

if your not lucky enough to have a massage table and your doing this on your own , hang the leg of the effected side off your bed with your body on the very edge you will feel the piraformas muscle stretch ,relax, and stretch again . if that isnt getting it most chiros and massage therapists are good with those things, If you go with the massage therapist find a deep tissue therapist, remember to do both sides keeps it even
