I know that the Peace Corps pays a small stipend, not a salary, and provides you with housing, which can be a hut or an apartment in the city, or a room in a host family's home, depending upon where you end up. At the end of your commitment, it also provides you with an allowance to help you get set-up back into U.S. society (I believe it's about $6,000).
