Lot's of good suggestions, but some bad ones -- if you want good food no chains no tourist traps like Planet Hollywood(the worst), Tavern on The Green, Hard Rock or almost anything else near Times Square. Eating at Pizza Hut in New York should be illegal...for Pizza try Arturo's on Houston or John's in Greenwich Village.
I recommend Grammercy Tavern, Blue Smoke, Keene's Chop House...

Bouley
120 W. Broadway
Cross: Duane Street
212-964-2525
The Food is Exceptional along with the service & decor!!!
You will have 6 waiters to serve you...
It will run you between $80 - $100 a plate but I swear to
you it is worth every dollar...
Note:
They have a prix fixed lunch for $35, its a bargain!
Check out his web site.
BTW:
Reservations are a MUST...
Ask for a 5pm seating...
Investing in a Zagat's Food Guide can give you much

My suggestion is to pick up a Zagat guide for NYC restaurants. Not only do they provide the ratings for the most POPULAR choices for every genre of restaurant, but they also rate the decor, food, service, and give a general price range to keep you within whatever price point you may be looking at. They also provide addresses, phone numbers, and hours of operation, so you can pretty much plan your whole trip, lunches and dinners , from virtually any restaurant from New American, Indian, Thai, Chinese, Japanese, Italian, French- whatever you might be looking for- for your entire trip. Bon Appetit!
