so say i know a travel agent and want them to get a ticket for me. how does that work and how much is the discount? on average. roughly

Depending on the amount of business the travel agent does with the airline, cruiseline, etc. They make different levels of commission. This usually starts at 10% and could go as high as 30% of the fare. If the travel agent themselves will be traveling, they get special rates, but they have to show their IATA documentation when checking in, and the airline ticket or cruise line documents have to be in their name.

Many years ago you only had to pay the "Traveling Tax" !!

I am afraid to say I think this is no more.

It really differs with the agency. Check with your friend.
