Smoke machines typically use line voltage (AC) to operate the heaters so they do not have a step-down transformer inside. Also the heaters will consume several hundred watts of power and AC is required to run the fan, so you can't just open it up and run it on DC battery power. Your options are to either get a power inverter of sufficient wattage and run it from a battery, as has been mentioned, or buy a small smoke machine that will operate from 12V battery power like the one in the link below.

You can use an automotive battery or marine style boat battery with a 12 volt inverter to plug in an electrical cord.

Go to Radio Shack or Parts Express and get a AC to DC converter. You may need to talk to a specialist if you want to connect it directly to a battery.

I suppose you could determine what voltage(DC) it operates on....and bypass step down transformer and then hook up whatever battery you need to use.
(I am making assumption that there IS step down transformer.)
but there is probably some kind of rectifier in the power supply....
and you would have to disconnect output from rectifier and substitute battery...etc etc
