Reading your question - as stated - and having walnut trees of my own, I would think that the trees are rather big to dig up and transport to the stores. and, they are difficult to fit in a grocery cart.
Just a little humor there. The farmer's market idea is your best shot. and, if they are black walnuts - you don't have to pick them. They fall off the tree when ripe. You then have to dry the husks and remove them (a YUCKY Messy job, at best). Then they have to be shelled, another difficult and messy job.

You are better off trying to get them in to a Farmer's market.
