I've never been one to say that religion is a wholly bad thing, nor that everything bad is caused by religion - that would be ridiculous. However.. it's undeniable that religion causes a great deal of conflict and persecution and inequality and suffering in the world.

So, is it possible that we can have a civilised world and still have religion in it, or is religion inevitably going to cause problems all the time there are people still following it?

Civilized? Perhaps...

But if you can accept the fact that religion is a form of insanity, how productive can a society be?

For example, if everyone in the world was wiped out except for the inhabitants of an insane asylum, what sort of society would those people create? Now I'm not talking about the invalids, or the ones that have virtually no brain activity at all.

But what about the mentally retarded, and the schizophrenic, autistic? Could a group of people such as this forge a functional and healthy society?

My personal opinion would be no. Because their inability to rationally view most problems would prevent them from making truly wise and/or beneficial decisions.

Although this is perhaps a bit of an extreme example, the message remains the same. If people can't accept reality for what it is, I'm not sure that they'll ever truly achieve an "enlightened" society.

I think that many horrible things were made in the name of religion all through history.

I think religion is opium to the masses. But I don't think the world would have been a better place without religion.

Religion was made by people to control other people. And if it wasn't religion it would have been something else. The world would have been the same because humans are like that.

What should change is this specific gene in humans that wants to control others. That's what scientist should focus on!!!

So, to answer you're question, I don't think that the world would be peaceful period, with or without religion. The world would be peaceful without human beings. Unfortunately!!!

yes, as long as there is two different faiths. They will fight.
Either the world all be one religion, one truth, one way or you will have war. So what you have to decide is who gets to live.
Can't be muslims because they would just divide off into other fractions and keep fighting.
Christians aren't ;much better, the Catholics fought the Prostants in Ireland. Have to find a religion that doesn't fight with anyone and make that one the religion for the world.

The other way around, if we had a good religion - I'm partial to Christianity - that taught love and peace, it would help create a tolerant society.

For proof of a society w/out religion look up the histories of countries who created and place Communism as their politics. They abolished religion - and nothing better came of it! People were still killed and often hid their practices.

Problem is, we all seek a different "peace". And, inherently, people's greed/vanity/ego often takes them in the wrong direction.

I think it is. Religions and faiths don't kill people, people kill people. It's not the fault of the religions or the faiths, it's the people who follow those paths who have misinterpreted their holy words. Even without religion people would just find another excuse to be intolerant and violent of one another. You might as well say that the world would be a better place if we didn't have different skin colors, different genders, or different nationalities.

I do think it's possible, it's not religion that is the sole problem, it is the people who twist religion, and refuse to accept any other religion that are bad. People hurt other because they hate them, and they somehow twist their religion so that is supports their hate. They say god supports their hate when this is just not true. Most religions don't encourage hate. I guess maybe if extremists didn't act on their beliefs.

No, I don't believe that it has ever been possible to have a peaceful and decent world, period. The world was hardly utopian before religion, there was already warfare, even in societies that had never been exposed to religion.

It is my opinion that we will never have peace upon the planet with religion....Spirituality, on the other hand, is a different subject because it is an individual's quest for higher spiritual knowledge and true spirituality leads to peace...Religion leads to violence...And the funny thing about it is, that is what their Bible teaches...They just don't freakin' get it.

Hey glassman...looks like the world's falling apart WITH god.

The only way the world will realize peace is through the eradication of the parasite known as the human race. FACT.
