I want to get a puppy for my family which includes a 18 month old. I want a indoor dog, so I'de rather he be a small dog. I love the look of the pug but I never knew anyone with one, are they good with kids?

Go to Yahoo! and type in "dog breed selector" Several questionnaires will come up. They will ask you about your lifestyle and preferences. This should give you a good idea about the breed good for you. Whatever you do, dont go to a pet shop or a backyard breeder. Happy Hunting!!!!

I hate to say it, but a Newfinland I think thats how its spelled would be great for a child that young. They are perfect apartment dogs because they don't need much exercise, and they are very well with children. Pugs can be slightly tempermental which might rise bite issues in the home, and they are hyper active. St. Bernards are good as well for small children because they don't mind when the kids crawl all over them or pull their tail or ears. You need a tolerant dog like that until your child is about five or six. Talk to your vet, or to a humane society worker, (not a volunteer), and ask them what breeds they recomend...and then research the breed to see if its right for you. Its really easy to do, just Google the breed and there you go. Best of luck.

Please don't get a puppy right now. Too many people get a puppy then find that they are sooo much work along with trying to manage an 18 month old. The dog always suffers and pretty soon it is either dumped in the animal shelters or tied out in the back yard. Wait til your child is grown a bit and can help with
the daily chores that come with a dog - including accompanying you on its daily walks. Even a small dog needs exercise and socialization.

Our rescue does not place dogs with people who have children under five. Kids can be very hard on dogs and an 18 month old does not need a pet.
Pugs are very sturdy little dogs and have a nice tempermant but have some health issues you should do some research on them before buying one so you know what you could be getting in to.

There is no one good breed of dog for a family dog. It is best to look around and visit responsible breeders who will help match you to the right puppy. I would also check out area shelters/rescues.There are some wonderful dogs there just waiting for a second chance with a loving family. Be aware though that many breeders will not sell a puppy to families with small children and many shelters/rescues won't adopt to families with small children either. This is for safety reasons to both the dog and the child.

I have always found german shepherds to be one of the best dogs to bring into a childs life. If they are raised together all the habits some develop won't become a problem because you can nip it in the bud when he or she is very small. German Shepherds are very playful like your now 18 month old and growing will be. I have a litter of GSD coming in late September and I already have 2 deposits, both families have real young ones and want to introduce their puppy now. GSD are wonderful indoors, at least mine are because they aren't the giant sized shepherds you sometimes see. Anyway just wanted you to consider these wonderful friends for life for your child and your family.

I'd wait. Till the kid's about 4 or 5. That's what I'm doing with my kid and my future dog. At 18 months, neither the kid or the puppy will know what the other is and that's a recipe for disaster for the puppy and the kid.

Pugs are very friendly. Another good choice is a Boston terrier. The main thing is to make sure the puppy and child have lots of supervised time to get used to one another. The child needs to be taught not to pull the tail, etc. The puppy needs to be taught not to bite.

The only kind of puppy you should be getting for an 18 month old is a stuffed animal puppy.
