I am about to switch from infant to a convertible car seat. I'd like to buy only one convertible car seat (with detachable base, e.g. Britax Boulevard) and at least 3 bases (for myself, my wife's car, and grandparents' car)-just like I do with my current Graco Snugride. I was unable to find a base for convertible seat which can be sold separately, at least online. Is this solution possible at all? If yes, would appreciate if someone shares.

Nope - they aren't made that way, because the child gets too heavy to carry. But they are a lot easier to install then the infant seat, so you can move them into each car when necessary (although you probably don't want to do it everyday!). The Britax Marathon is the one we have used and it is really simple to install correctly - I have moved it a number of times to go on car trips with friends, etc. and it is really simple.

As for the seats with seatbelt slots I saw someone mention in their answer (so the seat can be used as a booster later), those are great, but I don't believe they sell a model that can be rear-facing. They are a forward facing model only, so if your child is still rear-facing, you need to get a convertible for now, and then switch to a booster down the road.

I've never heard of a convertible with a detachable base-sorry. I do recommend getting a convertible seat with seat belt guides for later to save you some money down the road.

Convertable carseats probably don't offer a detachable base. Once your child's in a forward facing seat they're too heavy to carry them along with the seat.

Convertible seats are one piece car seats and do not come with separate bases.
