How many days does a dog/cat stay in heat?

I have a cat that is currently pregnant and I did not even know she was even in heat. Is this a long time? Answer for dogs or cats please.

Hey don't let these people misguide you,, a dang dog doesnt go in heat for 2 MONTHS!! Dogs come in heat and go out of heat it usually is timed from the 1st spotting which from there on for 7 days the dog is in full heat and will breed sometime from the end of the 1st 7 days and the last 5-7 days. Dogs take 63 days to have a litter from the 1st days after the initial 7 and when you see them breed, If not see then figure from the date after the 1st 7 days and then as in humans you have created a 2 week give or take for the pups to arrive,, one more pointer for DOGS when they 1st start producing meaning droplets of milk you can be sure she will have her pups within a few days. Get her spayed. NOW. It will cost maybe $30 extra to do while she's pregnant, but there is absolutely NO sense in introducing extra kittens in an already overburdened world. I have to see perfectly healthy animals get euthanized every day at the county animal shelter, and it's sickening. If you absolutely know you can get homes for as many as 10 kittens, then you can wait, but those 10 homes could be rehoming animals on a euthanasia list right now.

I read some of these answers and they are ridiculous. A cat will stay in heat until she gets pregnant. If you are going to let her have the kittens then you need to get her spayed after the kittens have been winged otherwise she will get pregnant again and very quickly. Take her to the vet now, if she is not do far along you can get her spayed now.

I have talked to vets about this plus my own experience. There is no set time for being in heat. I was told they are in heat as long as a male is nearby. My cats are inside and she ocassionally got in heat. not as many times as one friend's cat who she left outside in a screen room
