If a car is turned off (say you're sitting at a railroad crossing and shut the engine off) and a car hits you, will the airbags still go off?

Yes. The airbag consists of chemicals that are separated from one another and when a strong force is applied, the chemicals [sodium azide (NaN3) and potassium nitrate (KNO3) ] meet and a chemical reaction occurs to produce nitrogen gas, which inflates the airbag.

Well, you're not likely to be hit head-on while at a RR crossing. But to answer your question, yes it will deploy if the impact is violent enough. Modern airbag systems are active whenever sufficient weight is on the seat regardless of whether the ignition is on or off.

Yes because the system is designed to hold the required energy to deploy the air bags even if you cut the B+ to it.

edit>>The Derm or SDM hold the charge to ignite the air bag and no battery is needed for deployment. Do a google search for airbag and SDM or Derm. You'll find plenty of info to confirm what I said.

No. When you first get in the car and turn on the ignition, the airbag light comes on in the dashboard display. This indicates that the electrical system is charging the capacitors that power the airbag circuit. When they are fully charged, the light goes off. After you turn off the ignition, the airbag circuit is disabled, and the capacitors discharge through a ground. So after the ignition is off, the airbags are useless.

no but ill be damned if the dont when you turn the car back on. it also depends on how hard they hit you, we have second generation airbags now and it takes a hit in excess of 15mph to make them deploy. this is also why they tell you to never stick your arm in the car and try to start the vehicle because a airbag will break your arm...

And without a doubt they do have the RIGHT OF WAY! the air bag system keeps volatge to blow the bags for up to ten minutes after the engine is turned off

yes , if he hits you in the front end just right and sets off the sensors. The air bag gets power from the fuse in the fusebox.
