I personally don't think a 1-1/2 year old should be breastfeeding still. Once a child is old enough to drink out of a cup they should be getting weaned off breastfeeding or bottle feeding.

It is definitely OK if a child is still breastfeeding at 18 months. In fact it is very good for him.

Contrary to popular belief, the milk does not suddenly lose all nutritional value then. Think about it! If the child should be "drinking milk" then WHY is it suddenly better to give cow milk not human milk?

Last time I checked humans don't turn into cows at 12 months. They still need human milk!

Have you ever seen those silly commercials for "Pediasure" on TV? Toddlers don't always want to eat a balanced diet. If you are still breastfeeding, at least you KNOW they are getting some excellent nutrition there, even if all the veggies ended up on the floor and in his hair instead of eaten LOL! Breastmilk is a lot cheaper than "pediasure" drinks, and more nutritious.

Society has some messed up ideas about what is good for kids. Breastfeeding is not perverted, twisted, gross or sick. You cannot force a child to nurse, when they are ready to stop, they stop. Do not allow pressure from people who have no clue to affect the decision you make. Do what your heart tells you is best for you and your family, whether that is continuing to nurse, or gently weaning your baby.

It's okay to nurse a a child who is 1 and a half. The recommendation is to nurse at least 1 year, and then beyond that if both the mom and baby want to. I would however make sure the baby is getting whole milk and able to use a sippy cup too.

The WIC (Women Infants Children) government run program usually recommends that women can breastfeed up to their child's first birthday. By age one they are ready for regular milk. Even if a woman can breastfeed for only a month it's an excellent jump start for their newborns giving them wonderful antibodies to help their immune systems and an amazing way to bond. I would have to say that after age one year a child should definately be weaned from the breast as society might misconstrue an older child still nursing when they should be learning to drink from a cup by this time. Personally, when my two children started getting their teeth around 6-8 months I decided it was time to wean them from breastfeeding.

Nurse your child as long as you're both enjoying it. If that's for a few more years, go for it! Don't listen to these people telling you that you should wean now. They are only showing the world how ignorant they are about breastfeeding.

I completely trust Tanya. Wean once you and your son are waiting. little ones do no longer would desire to end nursing while they get the teeth! that is ridiculous! they can't chew and nurse on the comparable time, that is not obtainable. My little ones immediately discovered that in the event that they bit Mommy, the milk stops and Mommy took them off the breast. good success, and carry in there...do in basic terms what you think of is optimal!

I was breastfed until I was 3 and my son was breastfed until he was a little over 2. I think under 3 is okay in my opinion.

My son was highly allergic to numerous things milk being one (and no not lactose intolerant but allergic to milk there is a diffrence lactose means they cant digest it allergic to milks means he would blister up) he refused soy milk, goats milk, rice milk you name it so he was breastfed.

Dont listen to what ppl tell you the average american baby is breastfed for 6months and the average african child is breastfed for 6 years the world wide average is 2. I got so much lip from ppl in the streets or even friends but you do what you feel in your heart is right! a good website and magazine is Mothering.com

As long as both you and the baby are comfortable with it, keep breastfeeding. There is absolutely no recommended end time for breastfeeding.
Ignore those that can't read or are just making wisecracks. You obviously said 1 1/2 as in 1.5, not 11 1/2. Duh.

Nobody can tell you how long to breastfeed, nor can anyone tell you if it's right or wrong. You nurse for as long as you're comfortable doing so.

I myself, nursed my firstborn until he was 3 months and at that point I felt like I couldn't do it anymore because he was always hungry and I felt like I couldn't keep up! ;-) I breastfed my second child for 20 months. There's absolutely nothing wrong with it, so don't let anyone tell you otherwise!!

Other than that, I think momma2ming's response was right on!! :-)

Good luck with your decision!

WIC and others recommend nursing for the first year. other organizations will recommend nursing for the first 2 - but studies have shown that after the first year, your baby is not benefiting nutritionally from breast milk. this is the long and short of it - your baby does not need the nutrients nursing provides after age 1.

i know nursing is as comforting for the mother as it is for the child. but a child will have to begin to be more and more self-sufficient as time goes on. they will need to adjust to milk (soy or cow) in the future, and they will reach an age where this action (nursing) will be psychologically inappropriate. after 2, it can even be damaging.

if you are still nursing your 18 month old, i would recommend that you begin the weaning process. your child might just surprise you in how well they will adjust!
