I have the monitor plugged into the laptop however everything is being displayed on this (laptop) screen and not my monitor

Right click on the laptop display, and select PROPERTIES. Click on the tab that says SETTINGS. Select the monitor for display, not the laptop.Click APPLY. Click OK.

On many laptops, one of the function keys at the top (on mine, it's f8) will switch the video to the external display.

fn key or function key and f7 f5 f4 which ever is your crt display(will have monitor on key)

also if you are using an ati or nvidia you have to go into display properties and enable second monitor to view as a CLONE

Ok right click on the desktop it will go to the display settings and im not sure which one but it will have what you need.
