Why the heck would you move to a place where you will need protection? That's my first comment.
Second -- don't assume a particular breed will protect you. Out of my 5 Dobermans, only two would be what I would call "really" protective. Two were borderline and one would bark, but back down if severely challenged.
If you really want protection you can depend on -- try a 12 gauge shotgun.

Neither. You are buying into breed stereotype, as does most of the country. Pit bulls are NOT "protection dogs". They will LICK to death any intruder into your home. They LOVE humans. Dobermans are better than pit bulls for "protection". However, the best choice would be a German Shepherd. And, since the shelters are overfilled with them and they are killed everyday for lack of homes, I'd start there. And, by the way....German Shepherds hold the record for most dog bites received by breed....not pit bulls.

If you are planning to get this dog, and give it a good home for the rest of "it's" life, then put your money into a german shepard or a doberman....these two breeds are the smartest and holds all the intelligence of all dogs. I have had both, and they are equally protective, stay close to them, socialize them, and you'll have the best friend and protector that you would ever expect to have, good luck, you can probably find a great one at your local shelter as well. ellie

Dobermans were bred as personal protection dogs.
Pitt bulls were bred to fight other dogs not protect humans. They will protect owners but are better suited as fighter dogs.
Dobermans were bred for personal protection.
Be prepared to spend TONS of time training with a doberman. They are very independant thinkers and will rule the house if you do not take a firm hand with them.
They are great dogs and I have owned them for 17 years but it takes a dedicated owner willing to spend time and train with them or they create probelms in the house.

Dobermans are my favorite breed, I also love pit bulls. However you should get a dog because you want a pet and the breed is a good fit for you, not because you want a body guard. that should only be a nice benefit that happens to be part of the total package. Dogs require ALOT of time money and affection. They are totally worth it if you want one for the right reasons, however its alot cheaper to get an alarm

I don't think that the breed matters as much as the training that you put into the dog. I'd prefer a doberman though.

Both would be excellent for protection as well as companionship but both breeds can be unpredictable so be sure to do LOT'S of research and find a reputable and responsible breeder. They know the breeds very well and know how to breed out the bad traits and keep the good ones.

i have had pit bulls for years. they are the most protective, most loving to family, loyal dogs that i have ever seen. i had a lot of problems with an ex husband and i had small kids so i didnt want to get a gun. so i got a pit bull.
before you do get a dog, make sure there are no laws prohibiting pit bulls in your area.
