My family's HP Photosmart 935, not yet 3 years old, is no longer worth anything. The pictures are mostly black with multi-color horizontal lines everywhere.
So, I am going to by a digital camera. I am looking for something under $500, optical zoom of 4 or more, and 5 megapixels and up. I would prefer Canon, Olympus, Kodak- no HP's, please. All polite and helpful input is appreciated. Thank you all!
Here is a review of our old camera: http://www.dcresource.com/reviews/hp/photosmart_935-review/index.shtml

I went with this Panasonic model. It's small in size, the price was right about $550 after buying the camera with an extended warranty, carrying case, extra battery and 2GB SD memory card.
I chose this model due to size (fits in a pocket), price (about $330 on sale), resolution (5 MP), length of zoom (10X optical), the high quality Leica lens, optical image stabilization and the size of the LCD.
Since living with it for about a month, I can definitely say it takes very nice pictures for the $$. Macro up close shots are fantastic, the zoom and stabilization work very well and battery life is great.
I checked out the Sony and Canon cams - I almost bought the Canon S3 IS but passed due to it's large size and higher cost. If those items are not an issue for you check out that camera as well because it's a very nice camera.

I have been using an Olympus SP-500UZ. It's 6 mp with a 10x optical zoom, and uses XD cards. I have found the color and detail to to be excellent. It's light and easy to handle, and I've really enjoyed working with it. The only issue someone might have with it is that there is no image stabilization.
Another one you might check into is the Fujifilm Finepix S9000. This one is 9 mp with a 10.7 optical zoom. Uses CF or SD cards. I love the Finepix cameras, and I think Fuji's Super CCD image sensor is one of the best around. This one feels and handles more like a standard SLR camera. I think there is a $100 rebate until August 31, so it might work into your budget. Definitely give it a look.

Ten years, it really is a not ordinary one, and it does matter on how a lot you shoot. a pro who may shoot 5000 images each month in some godforsaken position will placed on out the mechanicals of a digicam really right now, in less than 3 years. If it isn't ordinary use that you're concern your digicam to, then you truthfully favor to get a tank of a digicam Nikon D3/3S/3X and Canon 1DmkIV and 1DsMkIII will be the type of digicam you want. you'd be wanting a climate sealed lens to flow with it. Even then this is now unlikely to be indestructible. when you're extremely prepared to splash then a Leica M9 equipment would also be an selection, the Leica is a extra spartan digicam meaning a lot less to flow incorrect. when you're going to apply it in severe circumstances, then you truthfully ought to seem at organic mechanical cameras, and capturing movie, per chance a Leica M3, which has no electronics to interrupt. when you're going to infant your digicam, and in ordinary words take it out even as the solar is shining, and the elements is warmth then i'd imagine the present Canon 550D (or the different get admission to point SLR) and equipment lens would probably do the interest. obviously it is going with out affirming that between the 550D and the 1D there are an excellent type of cameras which could get up to various volume of abuse, so it extremely relies upon on the way you want to apply the digicam.
