I have had cats for years and I have had dogs for years - at different times of course. I really believe a dog is smarter. The dog will look at you if you call his name - about 98% of the time. A cat will maybe look at you 10% of the time - and it was always a shock to me when the cat knew it's name.
My dogs knew hundreds of words and responded to me. I could say "water" while out in the yard with the dogs and they would run over to where the hose was hanging beside the house. I could train them to stay out of the street and play only in their yard.
Cats can not be trained - and the only reason they are litter trained is because it's the only place in the house where there is something that they can bury their poop in. I like cats, but they are in their own little worlds and do not communicate with my world. Dogs, on the other hand, want to be a part of my world and probably think they are human like me. So, dogs it is.

I believe, out of all of the pets that I have had throughout my life...cats are usually the smartest when it comes to being sly and sneaky!! Don't get me wrong, I have had a few very sneaky dogs too....but they are usually SO obvious when they do something they shouldn't!
As far as training and LISTENING!!! Dogs are smarter (or just obey!!) haven't made my mind up on that one yet! :)
(Although I have to say when I was 18, believe it or not, I taught a cat how to fetch!) That was one of the coolest cats I ever had.
We have two full blood german shepards and a lab. Awesome dogs..(they are our "other babies!!!".....but let's just say....we don't have cats even come around our yard anymore and if they do, they don't stay very long!!

I truly believe cats are smarter but maybe that's just because i favour cats i do know that all animals both cats and dogs are smart because they can detect when something bad is going to happen

They can both be very smart yet the can both be dumb as a rake its that they both r an intelligent animal dogs learn how to do tricks and listen to there owner and they can be guard dogs and cats they r sneaky and sly and can be very tame and they learn to listen to there owner also and both animals grow quick attachments to their owners but that's just what i think u may think different but all the stuff i said is true so NE way i think they both r intelligent

Cats. A cats IQ can only be surpassed by apes. Thats pretty darn smart, dont you think? They just don`t do anything unless they have a benefit. I think that is pretty darn smart too!

Cats, because they know not to listen to people. That's why I don't like them, they're too smart.
