Too much light will cause your eyes to be closed and then at some instance even when you open your eyes, you strained your eyes and unavailable to see things around you. It is called blinding light.
Total darkness without any streak of light around may cause your eyes not see anything near or far before you no matter how wide will you open your eyes.
The common ground there is our ignorance to see that there is no common ground.
