lock yourself in a room and make a call to 911. do not try to confront the thief. don't put your life in danger for material stuff.
you could try running out of the house and knocking on neighbor to make 911 call from there. but look out the window first to see if there are more of them outside, or in a car.

Call the police, never confront a thief since he may have a gun or something that can hurt you.

It's too late now! The answer to your question is going to be 'take whatever you want' since they're already 'in'! The question should have been preempted by effective security measures to keep thieves 'out'.

Leave the house if you can and call 911 at a neighbor's house.
If you can't leave, be quiet and let her steal what she want to. Don't put your life in jeopardy - you are too important.

I would usually rough em up and threaten them and take there wallet and or weapon. If I wanted to avoid confrontation, I would follow them to their home, wait until they are asleep or out robbing someone else and break in and get my stuff and maybe some of their stuff too.

If you are home during home invasion be quiet, get away from the house, and call police. If you have a weapon at hand you are within your rights to shoot the invader.

check the law of your state/jurisdiction. because you can shoot a burglar on your own property and be justified in doing so. make sure to shoot him dead because in this country, people sue, and if the burglar lives, he may sue you for compensation (medical costs) from the injuries he suffed when you tried to kill him.
