Adultery is generally defined as consensual sexual intercourse by a married person with someone other than his or her lawful spouse. In many jurisdictions, an unmarried person who is sexually involved with a married person is also considered an adulterer. The common synonym for adultery is infidelity as well as unfaithfulness or in colloquial speech, cheating. It was also known in earlier times by the legalistic term "alienation of affection".
The sexual partner of a person committing adultery is often referred to in legal documents, especially divorce proceedings, as a co-respondent, while the person whose spouse has been unfaithful is often labeled a cuckold. Originally, the latter term was applied only to males, but in more recent times women have been characterized in this way too.
A marriage in which both spouses agree that it is acceptable to have sexual relationships with other people is termed open marriage and the resulting sexual relationships, though still adulterous, are not treated as such by the spouses.

When God said, " Thou shalt not commit adultery " ( Exodus 20:14), He knew exactly what He was doing. Adultery ends in humiliation and revenge. Adultery breaks hearts and shatters lives.
The basic purpose of sex is seen in Genesis 2, where we read that God created man, male and female: " The two become one person " (v. 24). It symbolizes the complete giving of oneself to his life partner. But outside of marriage it can only be a meaningless act, merely selfish, undisciplined self-gratification. And whenever it is indulged in, it destroys the very heart of marriage.
When a couple gets married they are bound together, committed together totally, so when one partner goes off by himself to find happiness and fulfillment with someone else, he betrays the marriage bed. That's adultery.

Adultery is when you have sexual relations with someone you are not married to and it also includes lust over a person other than your spouse. If you divorce your spouse and marry someone else who is not the same person you divorced it is also considered as adultery.
