Most people feed their dog really bad dog foods, has anyone looked at the ingredients of them?? I was just curious how many people feed trash foods such as beneful and pedigree. I recently switched my dog to a better food. While more expensive at least I dont feel like I am poisening her.

Iams, Science Diet and Purina are all junk foods too. If you can find it in a grocery store, you shouldn't feed it to your dog. All the better foods can only be purchased in a pet store.

I feed my dogs Innova EVO. Some of the brands I also like are:

Wellness
Natural Balance
Solid Gold
California Natural
Canidae
Fromm
Timberwolf

I worked for an animal hospital that promoted and sold Royal Canin brand. It's not a crappy brand either. A lot of the diets they make are prescription, which is beneficial to the dog or cat with a certain medical condition. The vet I worked with fed her animals this brand. As far as the vet getting paid by Royal Canin to sell their food, that did not happen. She sold the food because she believed it was a good brand. ADD: Where oh where do some people get the idea that veterinarians are not trained in nutrition? I suppose you think if you read an article written by anyone, then it must be true.

I have been a Great Dane Breeder for 30 years. I have always fed my dogs the highest quality food. for in the long run. you will have a dog that poops less and requires less vet bills.
All my dogs had longevity and good health. no hip displasia. or broken bones. ,,
Throughout the years they have come out with some pretty fancy dog foods. especially now when the big hipe now is Natural. and no byproducts. Different Breeds Need different things. Coat. skin. and teeth. come from good nuitrition.
Many Pet owners do not look at Ingredients when they buy food. If the food starts out with wheat. chicken by products. or soy. I do not buy it. It must be lamb meal. or lamb. chicken . parts.
Always the first ingredient is what the food contains the most of. Soy foods on large breeds cause Bloat and can easily kill a dog in seconds. stay away from soy products ,,
Never feed a dog right after or before heavy exercise.
When i sold puppies , I always started them on good food .a bag of what they were eating. I recommend .. Nutro Products. Abady. Maxi. I am trying a dog food now called Chcken soup. for the dog. all natureal , vegetables and chicken. I am not fond of it. and going back to the Nutro. Lamb and rice. good on digestion and less stool. ,,, Some people feed all raw meat and tripe. I had a bad experience with calcium phosphorous levels. but some breeders swear by it... I guess it depends on the supplier.
I have also make my own dogfood. rice, fish.. barley. etc. my vet sells a special food for allergic dogs. potatoe and fish. diet. they say it works. well.
Now my problem is my dog is eating better than i am. but that is ok. she is my best friend. and as my mom used to say
YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT

I definately agree with what u are saying. My dads sheltie died of kidney and liver failure associated with the poison diamond had in their food before they recalled it last year, it is a shame that pets had to die from their contaminated dog food.

I feed mine the raw diet and they thrive on it and so very healthy. I do feed innova when my kids have to feed my dogs maybe once or twice a month.
So many people trust the petfood companies and it is hard to make them understand they are feeding their dogs poison. Olroy a very big seller dog food has tested positive for the chemical used to euthanize dogs and cats and diseased and cancerous livestock. It is a fact that unclaimed pets from vets and animal shelters if they are not sent to landfills are sent to rendering plants to be made into dog food.
The top brands of dog food like pedigree, science diet, purina, all have cancerous causing toxins in them but yet people believe that when they say fresh meat it is true, but in all truth the ingrediants are diseased, decayed, rotten, cancerous meat goes into these dog foods.

Good question! I can see both sides of the issue and can only offer my opinion based upon my own experience. "They" say that if corn is one of the first 3 ingredients listed in the food, steer clear. I will agree with that one. However, I have a pit mix who has very sensitive skin (as many pits do). She had dry patches and balding patches (and was negative for mange, thyroid disorder, fleas, fungus and everything). It was basically a food allergy skin problem. I tried so many different kinds of "wholistic" and "natural" foods made especially for dog with skin problems. One of the brands - Wellness - is supposedly the best. Well, the Wellness brand made her sick to her tummy (and yes, I did do the switch of food VERY slowly, replacing little bits of old food with new food, etc., over a 10 day period or longer). She stopped eating the Wellness- just refused to eat. Finally, after exhausting most other possibilities, I tried Purina O.N.E. Sensitive Systems. It's the only food that has helped her to maintain a healthy, glossy coat and hasn't bothered her belly at all either. I have to go with what works. While Purina O.N.E. is not "super ultra premium", it's certainly better than "Dog Chow" or "Old Roy" (Walmart brand). I have to go with what works for my dog - and Purina O.N.E. Sensitive Systems is what works. It's not a question of spending more or less- I'd buy the Wellness or whatever if it worked- It's about what makes her healthy.

I refuse to feed my dog that commercial crap. She is my baby! I feed her fresh foods just like I make for my husband and I. This is not feeding her "people food!" She gets chicken and beef and eggs and oatmeal and rice mostly and she loves it. My vet said that is the best diet for a dog (fresh foods! Not table scraps!) and she is very healthy and has never had any kind of problems.

Amen sister. My two dogs both have allergies to the name brand dog food, and I'm can't think of the brand we get now but its an all organic food that is actually FDA approved for human consumption.

My dogs always ate Iams food. When they ate the cheap stuff it made them sick and have larger bm's. The cheep food is full of fillers that are just waste to the dog and not nutritional.
