Your absolutely right. A very mature attidtude.
Hatred does not cease by hatred, but only by love, this is the eternal rule
Do not speak harshly to any one; those who are spoken to will answer thee in the same way. Angry speech is painful: blows for blows will touch thee.

I think atheists are reacting to being told all the time that they have no morals and are heading to Hell. They are reacting to growing up in a religious environment where the idea that God exists is a given and is not to be questioned. This makes athiests angry and furthermore, many athiests believe the details that make religion work (such as miracles, creation stories, moral lessons) are quite silly, stupid and they believe only stupid people would believe it. Therefore, that is why they write what they do and in the tone that they do it in. Historically however, religious people (whatever the religion) have persecuted others for not believing, while athiests have not done such things.
Also I think athiests tend or always use science to back up their assertions while believers use faith and that also seems to give athiests a leg up; it doesn't mean that God or God(s) don't exist but simply that some things can be proven not to exist or happen because of a mystical power.

I am very catholic, and if you cant see it or touch it, but you know its there, that is faith!! faith is trusting in god what you beleive!! I have fait in him that he will guide me through my life and he already has!! every day, if i cant find something important or something like that i pray, i pray so i can find it or whatever the task is, and in the next 5 minutes its there!!
When i was younger i would sit in the bathroom when my mom was having a shower!!! and there were some plants hanging up out of my reach!!, they would always fall on me and it was my angel playing with me!! i would grab out to touch it but you cant(this is a mind of an innocent child that didnt know the difference between athiest and crhisianity)... for the logical explination.. if it was any other time then they wouldnt fall, and the hooks were very sturdy!! I follow the 10 commandments and i am very happy!! i have a very happy life and i just dont know what it would be like to not have any faith...
a question?? where do athiests think people go when they die??

I believe what I want to believe for my own reasons.
I don't use logic to argue a point because I am female and we don't do logic.
I get angry when people won't take no for an answer!
There are so many un-answered questions regarding religion and beliefs that they can't all possibly be answered either by faith or logic.
People choose to belive in God for thier own reasons. They believe that he can offer them a place to go when they die, they feel he helps them try to cope with everyday life, they live by the guidance of the bible and that is great......... for them!
I don't believe in God for MY OWN reasons. I have my own mind with my own opinions. I live my life as a decent person who doesn't steal, kill, judge others and am happy with the way I am.
As for the person who said if you can't touch it or see it then it doesn't exist...... what a crock!! You can't see air or gravity but it is all around us and we couldn't live without it.
I would never knock someone for their beliefs. It has helped my mother-in-law cope with some awful situations, but for me personally it hasn't worked.
People knock others because they are insecure themselves. Maybe some of the things you have written make more sense than they realise and the natural thing to do is to get on the defensive.
Christians believe what they say is real and the same goes for every other religion going........ including athiests!
I worship my family. They love me unconditionally and will still offer me a safe place to go even if I haven't got on my knees and prayed to them.

To me, being atheist is the same as being any religion. I am no religion and all religions. I have found truths and lies in every single religion I have come in contact with.
I have to say that sometimes I do get upset with people of faith. Not because I don't think they have a right to believe what they choose but that some are so closed minded that they will get angry at you if you don't believe what they do. I don't get mad at people for not believing what I believe. I understand that what I believe is not something that others are comfortable with. I have posted honest question about Christianity on here and have been accused of being mean.
It seems to me that most religious people get so offended and are defensive about their beliefs. If you ask me, if they believed them as much as they say they do, they wouldn't have to defend them to me and wouldn't be offended by what I have to say about it. Everyone's religion gets redicule and jokes and complaints... that's just the way it goes. Deal with it and move on... That's like people saying, 'when I was in the 5th grade, Bobby made fun of me'. AND?!? everyone got made fun of...
The real problem here is that everyone plays the victim... and everyone gets their feelings hurt... and no one takes responsibility. It's not an atheists fault that you are offended by their remarks.. and they should not have to take them back or stop saying what they want. Just like you don't have to take this back or stop asking quesitons like this. If you are sick of the posts about your religion, stop reading the Religion & Spirituality section. It's that easy.

For most people, the whole atheist vs. christianity debate can only come to the level of name calling.
I type this next section as an atheist and these are my opinions.
A religious belief requires faith.
An atheistic position uses logic and facts.
The perfect example is the resurrection. There is no possible way to scientifically prove that a man named jesus died and was resurrected. Many christian scholars would say otherwise it can not be proven. Therefore, christians have to have faith that this event happened.
As an atheist, my hypothesis is that the resurrection did not happen. I base this on my own research and I would not try to evangelize because it was a personal journey through the collected knowledge of the past 2,000 years.
Because one is based on faith and the other is not, it's an automatic tie. Neither side, provided their faith/understanding is strong, can convince the other so it has to devolve into name calling.

I'm an atheist with respect to the bible, but agnostic with respect to the broader question of whether there is a supernatural creator of the universe.
I was totally content to peacefully coexist with all varieties of religious people in the United States until religious extremists gained significant political power, and started this country moving towards theocracy. In my mind, a Christian theocracy is every bit as bad as an Islamic theocracy. The separation of Church and State is one of the most brilliant parts of the U.S. Constitution and MUST NOT be weakened ANY further.
The radical Christian right has managed to frame the debate such that many decent, moderate Christians somehow feel they are under attack. I won't deny that some rabid atheists reinforce this view, which is a shame, but I'm pretty sure that the vast majority of atheists would be happy to fade back into the wood work if moderate Christians would stand up to the radical Christians.
Some atheists have argued that we are backed into a corner and most start criticizing all people who allow their faith to blind themselves in areas where reason must prevail. For example, it is not appropriate to teach any variation of Creationism in a public science classroom. We don't mind if you teach it in your churches, and many of us don't mind if it is taught in social studies (as long as other prominent creation stories are given fair time). When moderate Christians think they have to defend their faith in the science classroom, things have gone too far, and we are forced to push back.

I know what you mean. For us to tell you to use logic is just like you telling us to read a Bible. And a lot of times, it just doesn't make sense for either of us when we actually try it. You can use logic and still not agree with us and we can read a bible and still not agree with you.
The fact of the matter is, no one is going to change, or at least not many people. Believers just want us to believe, and we just want to show them what we consider to be the truth of the world. I guess we're just as equally tired of hearing that we're going to Hell as you are hearing that you are brainwashed.
But until believers stop posting saying "Believe or else you'll go to Hell!" we're just going to keep posting saying "You're brainwashed and you base your life on a 2,000 year old book written by cavemen". So nothing is solved and nothing is ever going to be solved. As much as you would like us to stop posting your arguments for believing, we're going to post ours for not believing. Its just the way the world works, sadly.

I support your attitude it shows maturity and diplomacy. Humans love to defend personal causes and take it to the extreme, but my personal opinion, considering the fact I don't believe in religion and its derivatives, is the minute you get obsessed with atheism you place yourself at a worst level than the one irrational Cristian's are. Diplomacy is the key. I have a couple of friends that are firm god believers and they could no be balanced any better. The only difference between them and I is they attend church, aside from that we are all kind, warm hearted people.

This is a peculiar yet familiar question. reason being is this;
you say believe in him bcuz he is everywhere
they say don't believe in what you can't see
Seems to me that people like you are asking those who attack christianity when it's they who should be attacking those who try convert these heathon miscreants into their point of view.
so essentially it's like each side is punching the messenger instead of the one who sends the messages.
logically speaking it is not logical to believe in something you cannot prove without a shadow of a doubt, cannot touch, hear, talk to either. believers will provide the bible as truth of gods existence and leave it at that. to others, it means nothing, it's a book. that's it. so the debate continues as to who needs proof, who needs to be logical, who needs to shut up and who needs to stop preaching. it's endless, completely endless. those atheists who tire of other christians spewing bible verses or saying this or doing this bcuz god said so is irrelevant to them since neither can we disprove god, nor can you prove god to exist.
the basis of logic is used so that there can be a level battle ground for both sides to debate. will never happen but that's the mentality. with logic, atheists hope to discount gods existence since there is no way, logically, to prove that he does. if christians were to engage in a logical debate then they'd have no real, concrete evidence to back up their claim. then at the same time they say they do not need pure evidence as it is a matter of faith and faith is immeasurable. this is a vicious roundabout circular debate that goes nowhere except up in the escalation of the debate.

I think everyone (Atheist, Jewish, Hindu or otherwise) is sick of all the religion-bashing. Being insulted and chastised makes people angry and vengeful and more likely to further the circle of hate.
Ignore the insults. Let people have their religion or lack thereof. Just let it go. Yahoo Answers will be a better place for it.
