I put Max up for adoption and a woman about 40 came to the door to pick up Max. She wanted to adopt Max to breed him with her poodle. Max has never bitten anyone since we have known him or displayed such lack of concern for a child. He bit a 10 month old baby boy, the woman and her daughter aged 9. I apologised for Max and now Im wondering what I should do. Have him euthanized or try adopting him out to older people? I am so mad at him right now for biting a baby that I just want to humanly put him down. Im sick over this. What should I do?

I wasnt there when Max bit the baby boy aged 10 months. I did see the bite mark on the childs pinky finger: no broken skin. He is well socialized and has been around children his whole life. He plays with two of my cats all the time.He is well fed and bathed reguarly.I couldnt afford to keep Max anymore which is why I put up a notice for adoption. She is a breeder. So I thought it was a good situation for Max. I just dont know how to handle it. Im in tears over it. I just dont feel there is an excuse for biting a child.

Don't euthanize over one instance!!!! Did the child handle him roughly or was it unprovoked? was it caused by jealousy? If so then you need to take him to obedience classes and re-establish your role of "alpha dog" because he may see you as "his" possession. Was he not well socialized? this can be fixed. Please, don't just put him down ALSO PLEASE GET HIM NEUTERED

I wouldn't put him to sleep. You don't know the full story as to what happened. It's very wrong for ANY dog to bite a child, but in this case, you don't know the circumstances. This child could have been very mean to the baby. Maybe Max didn't like his treatment today. My daughter was attacked by a dog a few years ago. However, I was right there as was the owner of the dog. They know that nothing she did caused the dog to attack. They never even had thoughts of putting the dog down like you did. In fact, they were upset the dog was going to have to be in the pound for a week. We were so upset at their reaction. I don't think your situation with Max is quite the same. Don't send him out to that house for breeding any more. If you really don't want to keep him, maybe give him to an elderly couple with no kids. He'd be great company for them. I honestly don't think this warrants putting him down without you being there to witness the situation.

Good luck!!

Thats a tough one....do you have any idea why Max would have bitten the poor child? There are a couple of things you can do. Work with your dog on the biting thing since obviously you know it can happen, warn people when they come over that he can bite. Pekinese dogs are very territorial and very protective over their people and home. You can give him to the humane society but they would put him down if they knew he were a bite case. Its up to you...I would take a few deep breaths and calm down. Sleep on it for at least two days. If you still think he is a threat to others around him then yes put him down, if not...then work with him.

Adopt him out to older people with no small kids, or a childless couple. It will be up to them to keep him put up if a small child comes to visit. I wouldn't put him down, not after one bite. He would probably be fine in a home with no small kids. I agree with the neutering too, so there aren't more "designer" mutts bred. Glad the other woman did not get him to use as a stud for her poodle.

This dog is a liability nightmare.  Unless you are willing to be sued for everything you have, you either need to put the dog down or adopt him to someone who will sign a statement that they know the dog bites and will assume all liability.

Just paying for the lawyer to draw up the papers will probably cost more than the vet bill.

Good luck, whatever you decide to do.

Give him a biscuit. Good dog!

If a dog bites someone its because it felt threatened. The kid was probably pullting its tail or some other activity whoch triggered its self-defence mechanism. Dogs usually recognize children as part of the pack and are instinctively protective of them.

Adopt it to an adult who knows how to treat a dog.

Its not the dogs fault that he bit someone. He obviously does not like kids. Neuter him before you give him up for adoption. There are already too many dogs in shelters. Make sure the home he goes to is experienced with dogs and there are no kids living with them.

He was frightened, he was not handled right, and it is not his fault. He is a dog, not a person. And I can all but guarantee he would have had lousy care by a breeder. Find someone who will love him and take good care of him. Pekes can be snippy if handled wrong, but all dogs respond to training, period. Good luck

well, if your set on giving him away then i would suggest that he not be given to anyone with children. alot of dogs, small dogs in general , feel threatened with small children . especially dogs that haven't had a whole lot of socialization with them. i don't condone your dogs behavior but since you say its the first display of aggression i don't think putting him down is appropriate either. best of luck.
