"Lobotomy" refers to a procedure that removes the connections to part of the brain. The word is most commonly used to describe an old procedure - frontal lobotomy - that was used half a century ago to alleviate the symptoms of certain mental diseases.
Frontal lobotomies are no longer done for mental illness, thank goodness.

Lobotomy refers to removing, or damaging, the connections between different brain regions. Frontal lobotomies were used to treat people with a variety of mental illnesses in the early to mid part of the 1900's, such as schizophrenia and other 'character disorders'. The frontal lobotomy was generally done by forcing a metal rod through the orbital socket (eye socket), pushing the eye out of the way, and was moved back and forth to sever the connections between the prefrontal cortex and the rest of the brain. The result of this was a horrible blunting of affect, a complete change in personality, and feelings of being a different person. At times, the skull was punctured and the lobe connections were destoyed that way. They were quite harsh.

Medical professionals (or psychos in their basements) drll a hole in your head. It was primarily used to "scramble" the "diseased" parts of a brain and make the person complacent- more like a zombie. They haven't really done it since the 60's, but there was one serial killer that I know of who used it more recently- Jeffery Dahlmer in the 90s...

Its when dr's drill into your brain and remove a certain area, used back in the day to "cure mental" problems, definately wouldn't recommend it :)
