In PetCo or Pet Smart they have they big beef or liver logs for active hunting dogs. Just feed him that as a treat well as his normal meals and he will fatten up in no time. My terrier mix was underweight from the pound and one log fattened him up in a week. If your dog is a large breed then get the big logs and use two or three and see if he is doing well.

If you have the dust a vet will give you high protein food but the log works just as well and you save big bucks.

If an older dog is underweight, first I would make sure it doesn't have any intestinal parasites, then I would feed it puppy dog food. Fatty table scraps are not good for a dog at any age.

Make sure you ween the dog over to a new diet progressively.

Use Natural Balance for puppies mixed with some adult chow until he is the desired weight..this will give him extra nourishment and vitamins. When he looks healthy, wean him to JUST the adult chow..
If Natural Balance is too pricey for you, you can get another top quality chow such as Royal Canin or the like. I am just using it by example because it has solved a lot of my dog's health problems..good luck..

Feed him more than once a day. Breakfast and dinner.

Mix in wet dog food or your dinner leftovers. Veggies, meat, rice...anything like that, make sure it doesnt have a lot of sauce or stuff like that. The more REAL food you can get away with and still have him prefer his dog food will be good.

I know you said its an older dog, but I still suggest puppy food. It has more protein, and it usually helps dogs put on a few extra pounds

The little sweetie is indeed dreaming. Studies show dogs and cats go through the sleep cycles much the same a humans. During the dream cycle you will see eye movement behind the lids. My Butch was dreaming about being a kitten and making nursing motions with his mouth. One afternoon he must have been dreaming about the fox who lived around in our old neighborhood because he was growling in his sleep.

He was being fed but was burning off the calories breeding :) Don't feed him a bunch of crap, but you can increase the amount of wet food you give him slowly until he gains some. when he's at his ideal weight slowly reduce the amount to a little more then you were originally giving him!

just have your mother-in-law move in with you. my mother-in-law is killing my poor beagle boy by feeding him table scraps that he absolutely does not need, he's over weight as it is.....and he's a glutton as well, never leave food unattended around this rascal!treats and biscuits are a good way to add some calories to your pet's diet....best of luck!!

puppy food...it has extra fats that will help and other nutrients...
this is also good to start feeding outside pets in the fall to help store fat for extra warmth in the winter....
