My dog did that too, and usually if I asked what he wanted he'd show me. Most of the time it was just attention. He's trying to speak to you the way you speak to him. Sometimes he'd go get his empy water dish or food dish, or the leash, but mostly he wanted me to say hi. There's really very little in the world that dogs want; food, water, and love. That's why they make such good friends.

he is saying, "gimme the ball, gimme the ball, gimme the ball...." Rots have a very limited attention span, but they seem to fixate on playing with the ball.

When you get home, he is saying "Hi dad, I am so happy to see you. Let's play." When you have the dog food, he is saying, "Thanks dad, you are such a good cook."

If you don't know his bodylanguage already you never will. There are lots of guesses that it could be. Only you know what is really going on.
