My husband and I will be on holiday in Northern England, arriving in Edinburgh Sept 8th. What is the weather like now, what are the temperature highs and lows? Any tips on what to wear during the day? We will be driving. We have a copy of the highway code book. Any tips on driving?

For your holiday in Northern England, flying to Scotland makes a lot of sense as it is closer than London. Tour Scotland also while you are there. A good place is St. Andrews where golf was born. I found it harder to learn to drive in the UK on the "wrong" side of the road than I did learning to drive as a tenny bopper. It took me about a week to feel comfortable. A manual transmission is common over there and I didn't have a lot of trouble with that. Gas is expensive. The round-abouts are a bit of trouble getting used to going around them clockwise which to us is backwards. I tell people it is like driving in a mirror. I tried to keep myself my usual distance from the left side of the road which rather left out the passenger. Remember, right and left turns are reversed. Always look both ways.

The weather should be beautiful this time of year. You can get a 10 day forecast from weather.com. Keep a jacket handy and dress in layers. You should try to visit Hadrian's Wall on the border of Scotland and England. It was built in Roman times to keep the Scots out of England which was controlled by Rome. I really enjoyed York but I don't know how far north/south you will be. Go visit the parks. Have a great trip and I hope this helps.

My first advice is never, never refer to Edinburgh as being in Northern England, it is in Scotland and the Scots are very sensitive about such things. Scotland is a different country entirely although it is joined to England,Wales and Northern Ireland in the United Kingdom.
The weather at the moment is a mixture of rain and sun with the temperature about 20 centigrade and we have had some cool winds lately. So be prepared for cold but on the other hand it could just be hot, that's the beauty of this climate, you just can never be certain.
Driving is on the left-hand side of the road and overtaking is always on the right. Always stick to the speed limits which are normally 20, 30, 40, 50,60 or 70 m.p.h.; watch for the signs.
There are also speed cameras which are sometimes indicated if they are fixed but there are also mobile ones which could be anywhere.
It is against the law to hold a mobile phone while driving although you will see a lot of people doing this.
In many towns there are stretches of road which have obstacles to slow you down, approach with care as they can shake your car to pieces and break your teeth. This is called traffic calming.
Have fun.

Sorry, you started off all wrong. If you are arriving in Edinburgh, you won't be in Northern England. Nowhere near it, in fact. I'd love to help, but not before you get a grasp on on that countries the UK consists of. Without it, British people you meet may well endeavour for their motorways to become much scarier than LA ones.

This is not to say I hate the English, I love them, but I loathe tourists that think Holland is an Amsterdam suburb and such.

If the lodge isn't totally booked, you may continually get a room. yet pay attention: the cost you pay will extremely frequently be the optimum on the speed-plan. that's way a lot less intense priced to make a reservation earlier and procure a more beneficial valuable fee.
